Eddie Applegate, an actor best known for playing Patty Lanes steadfast high school sweetheart on the 1960s sitcom The Patty Duke Show, died on Monday in Los Angeles. He was 81.
His death was confirmed by his son Michael, who said Mr. Applegate had been living in a care facility after a stroke in 2013.
Mr. Applegate was the third cast member from the show to die this year. Ms. Duke died in March, and William Schallert, who played her father, died in May.
On the show, which ran on ABC from 1963 to 1966, Ms. Duke played identical cousins, Cathy Lane, a proper young woman from Scotland, and Patty Lane, a perky, fun-loving teenager from Brooklyn Heights.
Mr. Applegate played Richard Harrison, Pattys hapless but devoted boyfriend, on 88 episodes. (In real life he was 11 years older than Ms. Duke.) In one episode Patty juggled simultaneous dates with Richard and her cousins beau, and in another her father became convinced that Richard and his daughter planned to elope.

RIP. Enjoyed the show.
Didn’t realize Patty Duke died in March.
I didn’t either. Freepers, for a nice ‘blast from the past’ YouTube the Patty Duke Show intro.
I missed that too. Interesting that her tv father outlived her by a couple of months.
Nick@Nite ran the original pilot once (which unfortunately is not on the DVD). He has this awesome scene where he comes in the front door and kisses Cathy, thinking she’s Patty. She slaps him, he kisses her again, and she slaps him again. He has this wonderful horrified conniption and runs away.
Slowly, little by little, the present vanishes into the dim mists of the past.
Kids, pay attention.
Someday it’ll be your turn to mourn for your Age.
RIP.
Seems like just yesterday that I sat with my parents to watch those broadcasts.
Patty Duke had a great career - but sadly we never heard from her cousin Cathy once that show was cancelled....
