The surprising origins of ‘post-truth’ – and how it was spawned by the liberal left

“Post-truth” has been announced as the Oxford Dictionaries’ international word of the year. It is widely associated with US president-elect Donald Trump’s extravagantly untruthful assertions and the working-class people who voted for him nonetheless. But responsibility for the “post-truth” era lies with the middle-class professionals who prepared the runway for its recent take-off. Those responsible include academics, journalists, “creatives” and financial traders; even the centre-left politicians who have now been hit hard by the rise of the anti-factual.

On November 16, 2016 Oxford Dictionaries announced that “post-truth” had been selected as the word which, more than any other, reflects “the passing year in language”. It defines “post-truth” as “relating to or denoting circumstances in which objective facts are less influential in shaping public opinion than appeals to emotion and personal belief”.

The word itself can be traced back as far as 1992, but documented usage increased by 2,000% in 2016 compared to 2015. As Oxford Dictionaries’ Casper Grathwohl explained:

The word/phrase "Post-Truth" is being used to attack Donald Trump, Trump supporters, Brexit supporters, conservative viewpoints, anthropological glowball warming deniers, etc.

It's being catch-phrased in the 'fake-news' witch hunts.

Keep an eye out for it and get ahead of it.

For over 30 years, I have seen Dem after Dem fall in line with the talking point that all of the Clinton scandals are just Republican attacks. Can’t get more ‘post-truth’ than that.

Liars prefer to control the definition of truth.

But this kind of control can only belong to the author of language itself.

I think it's wonderful to hear them whine.
Fox News will keep REMINDING the lamestream media HOW WRONG they were.
Some of the other "snooze" [pun on "news"] networks MAY cease to exist.

The Post-Truth to these crybaby liberals should be that they and all their friends, acquaintances and colleges around them are just a massive collection of regionally self-interested dilettantes who have no idea about what the rest of America (and Americans) think.

If the truth is against you, make up a new word. Even if the new word is Self-contradictory.

Academics, whether liars or not, can only use language as it is available to them. They have no ability to subvert its ultimate nature, although they try.

Anyone can refuse to submit to truth. But this is a dead end. No matter how man conducts himself, truth is always greater.

That is where we are failing in America. We tend to accept to readily what the Liberals and news media espouse.
The ones that call others racist and use vile language always try to say the conservatives are the ones guilty of what they are doing. Folks I joke not. In my opinion the Democrat Party has become the Devil’s Disciples!

I wonder if this liberal word means that liberals think that Trump constantly lies, or whether they think that that there no longer is such a thing as truth. It no longer exists, so they can say whatever they like.

I think probably the latter. Most liberals wouldn’t understand what truth means if it hit them on the head.

Stephen Colbert is incensed that ‘post-truth’ ripped off his original formulation of ‘truthiness.’

Well, there’s this ...

There are trivial truths and the great truths. The opposite of a trivial truth is plainly false. The opposite of a great truth is also true.

The demise of truth in journalism was seen by anybody who read The WSJ over the past 15 years. In 2000 before News Corp purchased The Wall Street Journal there was an editorial rule that every statement of opinion needed to be directly followed by the facts that supported it. After News Corp took over the paper that rule was no longer enforced.

On the other hand, The New York Times always went with emotional backing of an opinion. If you could find one person who agrees with a thought, you could hold it as true. So lets say that McDonalds raises the price of chocolate shakes by a quarter. If you can find a mother who says her child will now starve, thats ok. Print the headline that McDonalds are causing children to die. And if that mother is poor and black and lives in the intercity. You can extrapolate that to “McDonalds is killing black intercity children”

While The WSJ has not fully devolved into the emotional stylistic propaganda of The NYT. It certainly is on its way. And Post-Truth has seeped into the another of the few places where truth was valued and protected. There aren’t many left.

the past 8 years have been the ‘post truth decade’ where dear leader would say the most outrageous blatant lies imaginable, the msm would gobble them up like manna from heaven- their scribes writing each of the blatant lies down and binding them into a holy book that they now pledge their lives to-

Everything about the last 8 years has been a fraud- portrayed as gospel truth- by an adoring groveling, sniveling press

The thing about liberals is that they project THEIR shortcomings onto republicans- they accuse republicans of things that they, liberals, are guilty of

Liberals turned truth into fiction, and fiction into gospel truth with the help of the msm- now they are turning around and accusing trump of ‘post truth’? Really? Again- ANOTHER blatant lie that the msm will peddle as gospel truth

Snakes- every last one of them!

Can I point out the obvious. Post-Truth as a term is often used about Trump and Brexit. Thats because the left likes to make up such terms. The right uses the old terms, Lie, Liar, and False. As in Hillary is a Liar. We also like words such as crooked and corrupt. As in, Hillary is crooked and corrupt.

“Post-Truth” is where you can describe events or list facts, and the other person dismisses it with “that’s how YOU see it”, denying reality.
