Whitson will be celebrating her 57th birthday aboard the ISS in February 2017. On completion of her 179-day stint aboard the ISS, she will rewrite several space record books.

She is already the oldest woman to orbit the earth. She will hold the record as the woman with the most time in space. She will also become the American astronaut with the most time in space, 556 days, beating the existing record, 534 days, of astronaut Jeff Williams.

Among the other crew members, the 45-year-old Novitskiy is on his second flight into space, having already spent 144 days on an earlier mission. Pesquet is a 38-year-old rookie on his first spaceflight and the 10thFrenchman to be on a space mission.

The Soyuz MS-03 spacecraft that brought the tri-nation crew is the 49th Soyuz to dock to the ISS.

The ISS, and manned spaceflight in general, is an enormous boondoggle with no scientific value. We cannot afford it with 20-30 trillion in debt.

Spot on.

It’s become a ‘government is good’ propaganda tool. Governments spent obscene sums to build an outhouse then spend obscene sums sending ‘scientists’ up to it despite an almost total lack of scientific achievement from all the days in space and trips back and forth.

Seeing someone’s hair float around in zero G got old about 30 years ago.

Wow...a full year and a half of her life in space! That is astounding. Kudos to her for being physically fit to withstand launch and re-entry.

The price of a ticket to space is approaching what the average millionaire can afford, and some millionaires are trying to buy some in order to gain whatever value the perceive. Plus it’s demonstrably the high ground in military affairs. Sure, the ISS was conceived as a boondoggle and its probably obsolete, but it still represents an advantage in the global game of national interests.
