I think one of the most iconic movie scenes was the one in--was it Fourth of July?--something like that--when the revelers gleefully approached the alien spacecraft which promptly zapped them.

War of the Worlds with Gene Barry(1953) but then, Independence Day had a similar scene. So have lots of other Si-Fi movies.
