Metro Atlanta among nation’s worst in HIV/opioid deaths

New stats show alarming rise in drug abuse, HIV/AIDS infections

ATLANTA — Fulton County’s rate of opioid overdose deaths was more than double the national average in 2014, newly released figures show.

And the county — which contains most of the city of Atlanta as well as some of Georgia’s most affluent suburbs — had a higher rate of HIV diagnoses than all but one of 28 large cities studied, according to statistics released last week by the Big Cities Health Coalition project.

Fulton’s data were used because the county, not the city, collects the area’s health information, which is processed by researchers so it’s comparable between jurisdictions.

The county performed better than the national average on measures such as the adult obesity rate — 25 percent of adults versus 28.3 percent nationally – the adult smoking rate, and pneumonia/influenza deaths. The report compared data in the latest years available.

The opioid epidemic is a national problem. More people died from drug overdoses in 2014 than in any year on record, the CDC says. Opioids — primarily prescription painkillers, such as hydrocodone and oxycodone, and the illegal drug heroin — are the main culprits in overdose deaths.

Georgia is among 14 states that have seen significant increases in the rate of overdose deaths, the CDC says. In 2014, 1,206 people died from such overdoses in the state, up from 1,098 the year before, an almost 10 percent increase.

Heroin use has skyrocketed in Atlanta and its northern suburbs. In 2010, four people died from heroin overdoses in Fulton County, while in 2015, 82 people died.

The Big Cities Health Coalition data show Fulton had 11.7 opioid-related unintentional drug overdose deaths per 100,000 residents in 2014, compared to the national rate of 5.0 deaths per 100,000 residents.

Many of the deaths have come in northern Fulton County, a mostly suburban area.

The city of Johns Creek in north Fulton has joined other local jurisdictions in providing training and equipment to police officers and other first responders to administer an opiate antidote.

The coalition report shows only one other urban area studied outpaced Fulton’s opiate death rate: Kansas City, Mo..

Meanwhile, Fulton’s HIV diagnosis rate in 2013 was higher than every other city studied except for Washington, D.C. In recent years, metro Atlanta and Georgia have seen alarmingly high rates of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

“We are particularly concerned with the epidemic in the Southern United States, which has become a microcosm of the global pandemic,” Dr. Carlos del Rio, co-director of the Emory Center for AIDS Research, said in a statement. “Atlanta is the No. 5 city in the U.S. for new HIV diagnoses, and Georgia is the No. 2 state. It is critical for us to continue a multipronged focus on prevention, increasing HIV testing, improving access and linkage to care and ensuring long-term retention and viral suppression. The contributions of laboratory and clinical research and studies to understand how to improve outcomes of care will be critical in controlling the epidemic.”

This opioid crap didn’t come about until midway into the implementation of Obamacare. There’s something underlying with all of this.

It is telling that 64% of HIV cases are among <3% of the population...men who have sex with men and the 68% of male to female transgendered sex workers are HIV positive, is never mentioned.

gay population in midtown. Gays will get AIDS intentionally so they can start the med process early. If you start the medication process immediately after contrating HIV it is believed that its your best shot at avoiding full blown AIDS.

HIV/AIDS is a preventable disease. (No queer sex, NO AIDS). Stop waisting tax dollars trying to cure these freaks.

There was a big push in medical industry in late 90s/early 2000s for prescribing more opiates to relieve pain cuz poor pain control was deleterious to many patients recovery or treatment. They even started saying things like it is a patients right to be pain free and that pain was a sixth vital sign and called for prescribing folks to be more liberal in their doses...many practioners were leery but went along (they were afraid of encouraging opiate dependance, misuse and abuse).Well guess what. In the wake of so many other health related issues the risks of the above possibilies were downplayed and now we have more dead people.Coincidence? There are others factors for sure but the drive to be more liberal with doses may have led to the wider public availability of addictive opiates and without close monitoring...voila’

A fair number of the opioids deaths are in affluent northern suburbs that are in the 6th Congressional District, which is Newt’s old district. Still lots of Republicans around.

I read a CDC report from a few years back that estimated that over 20% of the gay population was HIV+. Add to that the high yearly cost of HIV meds, which need to be taken for life, and you understand why Obama was under such pressure to pass Obamacare.

The problem is, two-fold: the article never comes right and says what it means, ie, HIV is vectoring into the straight population via shared needles in heroin shooting galleries.

Duesberg was right. It's obvious. HIV is virtually harmless.

That sounds crazy, but I heard the same thing from someone working in an Atlanta AIDS clinic. She said they would high-five one another when they would be found to qualify for “Club Med.”

There’s something underlying with all of this

What's "underlying" is the fact that Jorge Busho opened our southern borders to our enemies. O'Bummer is expanding on that concept. Hamas is running drugs into America via that pipeline, as well as the messycan cartels.

Bush and Obama have facilitated the abundant flow of heroin into America.

Well if the dumb heads used safe free sex protection HIV wouldn’t be such an issue. Because the drugs drive it down so low it doesn’t show in blood test any more they aren’t even worried about condom use. Also those released from prison are NOT required to tell their partners they have HIV. Nor can the government tell them. Which is why it is rising so high in the female black population.

As for the Pain med use, no one is tracking the suicide rate from it being restricted or discontinued from the 1.33 Million Chronic Pain Patients who have no hope of cures. Pain med is the only way they function.

There was a big push...

Then there was a CMS mandate: If you want to get Medicare or Medicaid money you must push addictive pain killers on your patients. If your Medical School wants Federal money it must teach that it is cruel and unusual to allow a patient to feel even a small amount of pain.

On a separate digression, in Atlanta, Transgenders have a rate of HIV exponentially higher than other Gays. And Gays have a rate of HIV exponentially higher than straights.
