(The above is not a statement of fact. It is either satire or opinion. Or both.)

My first thought as well.

...and just before midnight. Probably selling his Beanie Baby collection......

“botched” “failed”?
This was not a transaction. This was using Craigslist in order to commit a crime.
When people used newspaper ads to commit crimes, the media never said “Botched Newspaper transaction.”

Who answers a craigslist ad and arranges to meet with the seller, cash in hand, at midnight, on a lone country road?

When the goods are illicit. Note the “victim” not cooperating.

even a crook should be able to predict an ambush.
But then, we are talking crooks here.

Isn’t get shot just part of the Graigslist experience? The only time I hear about it is on the news when something like this happens. Do the buyer and sellers take turns robbing each other?

Somebody expecting to buy drugs or an unrecorded gun. Or *ahem* "personal services."

I’ve done plenty of buying and selling on Craigslist. Never a problem. Given the time of night this went down and that the victim is not cooperating with police, I’ll bet a shiny nickel that it was all totally illegal anyway. That comes with a certain occupational hazard.
To: Future Snake Eater; Smittie
It wasn’t a Craig’s List deal at all.
That is just a smokescreen.

Shot in the “lower body”?
Is that the same thing as being “shot in the botched Craigslist transaction”?
To: arthurus
“Somebody expecting to buy drugs or an unrecorded gun.”
Just out of curiosity, what is an “unrecorded gun”?

One that has been through several sets of hands with no receipt or comes from outside the country not through regular channels. I had one of the latter many years ago when I was a commercial fisherman.

I have bought and sold several unrecorded guns I guess. Never heard it put that way before. There’s nothing illegal about that.

Yeah, but with an illegal transaction, it’s a little less clear cut. First the guy reading the ad probably wants a little privacy himself, plus he’s more liable to understand the seller wanting some isolation. Still, like you said, TOO isolated you’d think would be a red flag.
