Protests erupt in LA after off-duty cop was filmed pulling his GUN and opening fire at a gang of tee

Crowds of people have gathered to protest against an off-duty officer who was caught on camera almost shooting a 13-year-old who he was scuffling with outside his home.

The protests were sparked after a video that was filmed on Tuesday afternoon emerged showing the confrontation between the off-duty LAPD cop and a large gang of teens who he had apparently accused of walking on his lawn.

The confrontation ends with the officer pulling his gun out and firing a shot that did not hit anyone as the teens flee. Before that, the officer was filmed struggling with one teen who he accused of threatening to shoot him, then scuffling with the entire group of teens outside his home.

I am surprised not to find any reference to this incident here, it's the sort of thing that sets of a lively debate. If it has been posted already feel free to delete.

I will leave it to others to determine who is in the right and who is in the wrong in the video. Leaving aside comments about ethnicity or immigration status.

I trust the “large gang of teens” was not the local marching band?

Why was a group of teens loitering on his lawn?

Once the purple guy jumped the hedge, I can see why the officer felt the need to get his weapon in control before he was tackled - especially with purple dummy reaching into his back pocket like he’s somebody.

The protestors are idiots and the father who thinks his son has good manners has never seen his son’s behavior with his peers around cops and he, along with the other parents of these delinquents, needs to be taking their child out behind the woodshed for a discussion instead of preening around like fools.

Did that kid pull a knife out of his back pocket and then slide it back in?

I would suggest that the officer move to a new location immediately.

It is not clear what the kid did that caused the off duty officer to attempt to arrest him.

Was the 13 year old kid arrested?

And if he was not arrested, why was he not arrested for stepping on the cop’s lawn and then resisting arrest?

What is the maximum prison sentence in California for someone who steps on someone’s lawn?

Life.

Could be a third strike and it could be like “criminal trespass”, or something.

California has a crime called “terrorist threat”, section 422 of the state Penal Code. It’s a so-called “wobbler”, meaning it can be charged as a misdemeanor or a felony. An apparent gang member, accompanied by his colleagues, telling someone he’s going to kill him meets the definition of that offense. Detaining someone who makes such a threat for the purpose of determining whether he should be arrested is a lawful action.

Resisting, delaying, or obstructing an officer in the performance of his duty is a misdemeanor. The penalty’s up to a year in county jail and/or up to a $1000 fine.

There’s plenty of law there, the issue will be whether the officer identified himself, and what the kid really said.

The clown who blind-sided the officer in an attempt to free his buddy could arguably be charged with the crime of lynching, which in that context does not mean what it’s commonly thought to mean.

My guess is what’ll happen is everybody will go through the whole song and dance, then the two kids taken into custody will get juvie referrals and the parents will stop mouthing off and go away. There’s no significant damages here, so I suspect they’ll either have trouble getting a lawyer who’ll actually take it to trial, or if they get real lucky, the city’ll throw a few bucks at them to get them to go away.

The officer involved will be spending some time with internal affairs.

^5, of course it did, and I’m gratified to see it as the first response. GO! FReepers!

So this cop fired a warning shot that it’s illegal for a regular citizen to do. And did it in CA, where it’s doubly or triply so.

This will be interesting to watch.

Seems something is missing. Why was the cop holding the little punk. Must have been for more than lawn excursion. Possibly destroying property. Not clear.

That being said. Let them secede.

Do you know it’s a warning shot? He was struggling at the time. Could have been an accidental discharge.

A perfect argument for the bear spray I carry. And, as for the cop, he had a really bad draw. Very clumsy.
