Adam was strolling on Broadway in NYC Wednesday and we asked him about going back in time. Adam gives a visceral and pretty stunning reaction, but then walks it back a bit. As odd as it seems on the surface, there was one fate worse than Hitler, and that was Ernst Thälmann. Without Hitler, Thälmann would have been able to form the German government in the early 30s, at which point Europe would essentially have been handed over to Stalin (the Mussolini regime without Hitler would have collapsed), the British would have to have pulled out of the Middle East to protect themselves against the Communist threat across the Channel, allowing the Soviets access to the oil fields and ensuring that Palestine would never become Israel. What would have happened after that is anyone’s guess: there were enough Communists in the FDR administration that America would have remained neutral, the Japanese would have been able to take the oil fields in the East Indies, and the battle in Asia would have been between the Japanese and the Maoists, with the Maoists winning, and only (maybe) Britain, India, and half of Africa not coming under Stalin’s hegemony.
Hitler was hell, and he deserves his eternal infamy. Thälmann would have made for an even worse conclusion.

Clicked too soon...Thälmann, unlike Hitler, has an island named for him, off the coast of Cuba. It is one of the few places in Cuba where the population does not live in perpetual suffering. That is because the island is uninhabited.
