Pulling 33 foot Travel Trailer in Alabama on US231
03/31/2017 | Tnoldman

I am seeking advice on the general travel conditions on US231 in Alabama. I have travelled on the section of US231 between Montgomery, AL to the Florida line and it was great.

On my return to Indiana (leaving Florida on Sunday 4/2/2017 with an intermediate stop in Tennessee) I want to take US231 in Alabama from the Florida Line to I-59 heading toward Tennessee. I want to bypass Birmingham and I65. Sections of I-65 thru Birmingham are really bad for Trailer and RV travel.

This was our plan even before the I-85/75 elavated Highway Section collapse yesterday.

Anyone with Trailer/RV experience on US231 please share your experiences and pass on any advice.

I grew up in the area and live there now.

I am guessing you are in Panama City right now. If it were me I would take 77 North to Hwy. 20 then West to Hwy. 81 in Bruce. Take 81 North to Alabama line then 87 to Troy where you will hit 231.

These rural 2 lanes are in nice shape. Hwy 81 was recently resurfaced.

I would avoid 231 if I could. Too much construction and Dothan traffic circle is rough.

I pulled a 32’ Jayco for several years behind an F-250 with 460 V8.

About four weeks ago, wife and I drove from Tampa to Huntsville. We drove I 75 to I10 to 231 to I65. Dothan can have some traffic but it’s not a big place. There were some Birmingham issues but they were from central Bham and north to Fultondale. Lots of construction. I65 was clear to the Alabama state line from there.

I’m familiar with 231/431 from Gadsden but not from Montgomery to Gadsden. I suspect there is a significant amount of two lane traffic and a number of small towns.

I would seriously consider I65 to I459 to I59? This route bypasses Birmingham.

Or, you could take I65 to I459 to I20 to Pell City and then US 231.

Alternatively, consider timing your arrival to Bham to avoid rush hours.

Wish you well.

I guess you will need to drive around as I do not think you can jump the gap on the overpass with a 33 foot trailer : )

Good call - I try to avoid Atlanta anyway.
