ACRAMENTO, Calif. - California health inspectors have linked last week's botulism outbreak -- a rare and sometimes fatal form of food poisoning -- to a nacho cheese sauce traced back to a mom-and-pop gas station in Walnut Grove, CBS Sacramento reports.
State and county health officials have confirmed nine people have been hospitalized, including possibly a 16-year-old. Five cases were first reported on May 5. This week four more people have become sick.
CBS News reports a tenth person is being tested after showing similar symptoms related to the rare and potentially fatal illness.

Gas Station Not Joe Cheese...mmmmmmm
There goes Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives...
The largest Salmonella outbreak in Mississippi’s history happened at a restaurant in Corinth, Mississippi, when Don Julio’s Mexican restaurant served nacho cheese that had been contaminated by an undocumented alien worker. Over two hundred people were affected and many hospitalized.
Did they get gas?
I shouldn’t ask, but is this place owned by Indians(Asian)? Every convenience/gas station around here is Indian owned. There is nothing wrong with that, but they are all filthy. I got some tater tots from a place nearby. They didn’t taste edible. How can you FU up tater tots? All you do is drop them in the grease and pull them out.
I would not recommend the gas station sushi rolls either.
It’s also a good idea to avoid gas station sushi.
Nacho Mamas cheese sauce.
Well, duh.
Trump will stop at nothing to cover up the Russian investigation...
Eat here and get gas
It’s the ethanol they put in it.
Was it their cheese?
Mama Mac’s gas station on Hwy 57 just out of Priest River, ID servers up a tasty buffalo burger. You can burger down, buy bait, beer, ammo and game tags all in one place.
No sushi, though.
Gas station food.
Whats wrong with it? Its tuna. Its wrapped.
The cheese sauce probably came from a can that was not properly sterilized at the time of manufacture. The botulism is highly unlikely to be a result of anything anyone at the gas station did.
Failure to sterilize cans of food for a sufficient time at an adequate temperature allows Clostridium botulinum spores to survive. These bacterial spores must be heated to a higher temperature than boiling water to be killed. If they survive because the food deepest inside the can did not get hot enough, then they will grow. They cannot survive oxygen, but since the can is airtight, it is a perfect environment. They produce toxin as a by-product of their growth. It is the most potent poison known.
Home canners are recommended to boil non-acidic foods for 10 minutes prior to consumption because that will destroy the botulinum toxin if it is present. Do not ever lick the emptied jar or lid of these foods, because even a tiny amount can contain lethal doses of toxin. C. botulinum cannot grow in acidic foods (most fruit), so home canned fruits and jams are generally safe to eat without boiling.
