Florida woman evicted over massive toy collection
WSFA ^ | 05/27/2017

A massive stuffed animal collection was deemed a fire hazard and the woman who owns them has to move out - toys in tow.

Nancy Duchovnay's home is filled with thousands of toys. So many, in fact, there's only one place to sit down and just a small pathway through the house.

The collection spreads through the living room, kitchen, bedroom and even the bathroom. Appliances and other household items are blocked because there are too many stuffed animals to access them.

"Changing the sheets is a major problem because I have to get everybody off," Duchovnay said.

But it's not just a random pile of fluff. Each item is organized from Muppets to dinosaurs to Tiggers.

And they're not just for her. Duchovnay, 73, sends toys in gift boxes to charities around the world.

"I'm the Toy Lady of Jacksonville," Duchovnay said. "Considering what's going on in the world today, I would rather have these funny characters smiling at me. I just think they're funny - they're cute."

And not a Beanie Baby in sight. At least she apparently has good taste.

Change it to a m*slim building bombs in its apartment, and the m*slim is given welfare, free phones, free rent, and a discount on TNT.

Who was the rotten person who turned her into the rotten bureaucrat that made this decree?

She seems like a very sweet person and the stuffed animals are adorable.

Now if those were stacks of newspapers filling her apartment, surely everyone could agree that there is a fire hazard.

This collection could be even more of a hazard.

Mulder, how did you get stuck in there? I told you those stories of stuffed Snoopys coming to life and eating the neighborhood children can’t possibly be true.

Some angry old biddy or crab, no doubt. Here only mistake was remaining in a month-to-month rental situation (no lease). She certainly doesn’t look crazy to me.

People have become such sniveling little tattletales. No doubt some nosy person saw this and ran to the local bureaucrat.

I wonder if she tracks her inventory LIFO, or FIFO.

A few are cute. That many means she has a problem which she needs help for.

That’s nothing, last November I was doing my yearly assistance of Fedex through a contractor with their Christmas season deliveries and EVERY day I had a delivery to this house that was literally buried in everything you could imagine. Every window was filled to the top with everything you could think of, stereos, clothes, toys, magazines, tires cups, musical instruments, and the outside was the same. Stuff piled all around the house to almost the roof, the was even stuff ON the roof. And in the front was this porch which was filled to the top and this piece of plywood jammed against two columns that held up part of the roof to keep the stuff from spilling out and i would just leave the package over this plywood and the next day it would be gone. It seems this person had an unlimited amount of money - I would guess - and would constantly order stuff off the net and it must have been piling up for years. Never saw the person either. It was crazy, you could have just walked up to the house and walked away with a golf club set or shoes, records, all this stuff was all over the lawn and up against the house. I would always look for the neighbors too see to their reaction, but never saw anybody.

This collection could be even more of a hazard.

I agree that she is a sweet lady, and from what I saw in the video, she keeps the place clean. However, I also agree that the shear volume of stuffed animals in a confined space such as this does pose a fire hazard. There is just barely enough room for her to move around in the apartment.

The article didn’t mention whether she is a widow, or if she has any adult children. It appears that this 73 year old is perhaps alone (except for the toys and her charity outreach).

Have to wonder about her financial situation and if anyone else will rent to her, after the publicity.

She has rented the apartment for 12 years - wondering if she pays for renters insurance for that fire hazard.

Just the one photo and her home does not appear to be a filthy garbage dump like most hoarders.

Hope she gets help.

The landlord may just be a responsible who inspects the property regularly.

Apparently the landlord deemed it a fire hazard. The article doesn’t mention an official opinion. Maybe you should start a fundraiser for her to get a lawyer.

It looks like she’s on a month to month lease with a 45 day notice, so the landlord doesn’t need to give a reason, just a notice.
