Gray seals are making a huge comeback
Popular Science ^ | June 14, 2017 | Sarah Fecht

For nearly a hundred years, New England’s gray seals had a bounty on their heads. Maine and Massachusetts paid people to kill them, because they depleted fishing stocks. They were also hunted for their meat and pelts. By 1973—a year after the Marine Mammal Protection Act made it illegal to systematically kill the animals—a census estimated there were only 30 gray seals left along the entire coast of Maine.

Grey Seal
Elton John

Written by Bernie Taupin, Elton John • Copyright © Universal Music Publishing Group

Why’s it never light on my lawn
Why does it rain
And never say good-day to the new-born
On the big screen they showed us the sun
But not as bright in life as the real one
It’s never quite the same as the real one

And tell me grey seal
How does it feel
To be so wise
To see through eyes
That only see what’s real
Tell me grey seal

I never learned why meteors were formed
I only farmed in schools
That were so warn and torn
If anyone can cry then so can I
I read books and draw life from the eye
All my life is drawings from the eye

And tell me grey seal
How does it feel
To be so wise
To see through eyes
That only see what’s real
Tell me grey seal

Your mission bells were wrought by ancient men
The roots were formed by twisted roots
Your roots were twisted then
I was re-born before all life could die
The Phoenix bird will leave this world to fly
If the Phoenix bird can fly then so can I

And tell me grey seal
How does it feel
To be so wise
To see through eyes
That only see what’s real
Tell me grey seal

They will become pests again just like the sea lions on the west coast.

How does it feel to be shark bait. Ever seen video of great whites tossing seals around off the coast of South Africa?

People wonder why more sharks are off the california coast. Just following food.

Sharks seem to be making a big comeback as well. Back in 1976 when Jaws came out, marine biologists kept reassuring us that unlike in the movie, sharks didn't like humans and would almost always stay away from humans. YouTube isn't a scientific sample, but it is filled with videos of dangerous encounters with sharks. They seem to be losing any natural fear of us. One marine biologist in Australia a couple of years ago wrote that there are probably far more attacks than is generally recognized, and that a lot of deaths attributed to drowning were in fact shark attacks. Governments have tourist dollars to protect, just like the mayor in Jaws.

That was one of my favorite songs on that album. That and Roy Rogers.

Word is that sharks are color-blind but they avoid the poisonous sea snake
that has black and white stripes.

I’m reminded of the story regarding the seal that washed up on the shore of a small coastal town. People adopted the seal and nursed it back to health, then released it. Not a bad thing to do, but they released the seal alone instead of finding a herd first. The seal was shark food within five minutes.

“I don’t think you appreciate the gut reaction people have to these things...Martin, It’s all psychological. You yell ‘Barracuda,’ everybody says ‘Huh? What?’ You yell ‘Shark,’ we’ve got a panic on our hands on the Fourth of July.” - Mayor Vaughn
