Father, son on fishing trip haul rifle from Augusta (Maine) river

AUGUSTA, Maine — A father and son reeled in an unexpected catch on the Kennebec River over the weekend — a rusted bolt-action rifle.

The unidentified pair were fishing near the northern end of Canal Street when they brought in a Remington 700 with scope and bipod still attached and several rounds in the magazine, according to the Kennebec Journal.

They brought the rifle to police, who are trying to figure out who owned the rifle and how it got into the river.

Augusta police Lt. Chris Read told the paper that the rifle was “possibly related to some type of burglary, theft or other crime.”

The rifle was never reported stolen, according to police.

You should always have a gun in your boat in case you get attacked by a rabbit.

What kind of license do you need to catch something like that?

Probably a boating accident with an owner too embarrassed to report it.

The reason it may never have been reported stolen is because the owner didn’t record the SN.

Dang. I could’ve sworn no one would find it and I left it in a tube for protection .

Oh well...

From the look of the rust on the bolt I assumed it was open or there would be a pattern with less or no rust where it was in contact with the receiver. I would also expect it to be very hard or impossible to open the bolt with that much rust without using some penetrating oil and I don’t see any sign of that.

But I could be wrong.

Augusta police Lt. Chris Read told the paper that the rifle was “possibly related to some type of burglary, theft or other crime.”

What a dipshi* (or typical fake news from the reporter who used the quote) - it was also possibly dropped their by space aliens.

Right now, they have NO IDEA where it came from, or what its history is.

If the scope is a quality brand, it may still work.

So, in Vermont, they shoot close to the Pike to try and stun it?

Not me.

That’ll just really tick the Pike off.

I wounded one in the fin once. He kicked my donkey.

We found one leaned up against a tree in Wyoming about ten years ago. Someone apparently was lost.
