then you would be okay with jailing these people, because they are not going to stay off the stuff until they’re jailed....

it all started because bureaucrats at the Joint commission decided that all pain must be treated and documented and that the docs and nurses could never, ever use their experience and judgment or education to determine pain control.....

nope...that laughing, talking on the cell phone patient could demand Dilaudid and whatever and get it....and if they wanted they could get IV Dilaudid followed by IV Phenergan followed by IV Benadryl...and we HAD to give it to them...

oh, I agree...they must be forced to rehab...and it must be lengthy....first a short time for medical stabilization and then followed by a long time off the street..its for their own good, and society’s...

How about more rehabs. Even forcing people if necessary

If only it were that simple. There have been people who've gotten rehab and it hasn't helped for long. Senator Portman wants to throw billions of dollars at the situation. The problem with that is there doesn't seem to be any data about which if any programs are successful.

A few years ago, a 20-year old neighbor died. The girl had gotten addicted and had done rehab. At the time, those who knew her well were saying they didn't know if it was the illegal stuff or the legal "cure" that killed her.

There's no easy answer. I'll submit that too easy access to free medical care is part of the problem. People who can't handle their effects have been given much too easy access to pain killers.

Another problem with Narcan is they get saved and once they are released they go out and dose themselves again, sometime more than they are used to because the Narcan reduces the affect. Then the Narcan wears off and we start all over again with the od.

I was an alchy so I feel for the struggles of an addict but they are the only ones that can quit. With no fear, they will not change.

Society needs to stop feeling sorry for these people. It is their problem and they have to fix it themselves.

I have no problem with druggies overdosing and dying.
There is the carcass disposal problem though.
If their families don’t take the carcass the it should go to the incinerator with all the other roadkill.

Why we need forced rehabs. They are a danger to themselves and others.

Some of these people be crashing in their cars on the highway with their kids/grandkids in the backseat. Enough! We need to put them in rehab and they can’t sign themselves out until a judge says they may come out.

Will not work until they want to stop. Just because they dry themselves out doesn’t mean they will not want to race out and get that warm fuzzy feeling again.

Anyone caught using or possessing illicit opiates should be forced to go to a detox camp and forced to take narcan daily so as to guarantee a nice long period of withdrawal symptoms.

If dying is not enough fear I am not sure would instill fear in these addicts

we can’t turn our backs on people just because they are too stupid to want to live-

I don't know why not. They will cheerfully bankrupt us. I don't think the rest of us must become slaves to their self-absorption and foolishness.

A very good friend of mine’s son died of an opioid overdose back around 2007. The son was a West Point grad and officer whose jeep hit a land mine in Iraq during his second tour and he ended up with a broken back.

Following recovery at Ft. Hood, he was reassigned to West Point as a class advisor and that's where he died of the overdose. The drug he was hooked on wasn't for fun but rather to legitimately fight the chronic pain he suffered from his back injury.

The common perception about drug overdoses is that the individuals hooked are just fun seekers when that's just not true. Many of them are dealing with insufferable pain due to their respective medical conditions and are doing whatever it takes to alleviate their pain and try to live as normal a life as possible..........

Thank you for the kind words, thoughts, and prayers.

There’s no easy answer. I’m pretty sure getting much more serious about cracking down on suppliers and dealers is a component. But there’s no watching someone 24/7. People are adults and make adult decisions. Sometimes fatal ones.

I think there came a point where he just loved the drugs more than he loved living. I also think he never believed it would happen to him.

There wasn’t much anyone could do, shy of having him forcibly put in a detox and rehab program, but sooner or later he’d get released and it would then be up to him.

Thanks again for the kind sentiments.

Thanks for the thoughts and kind words.

This is an epidemic. The medical examiner and two narcotics detectives (NYPD) told us this is getting very common. It’s very bad. This is touching people from every background.
