In the near decade since The Hangover earned over half a billion dollars worldwide, R-rated comedies have chased the sensation, but few have come close.
This summer has been especially punishing for adult comedies. Most recently, The House, starring Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler as a couple that starts an underground casino to put their daughter through college, opened to only $9 million. Two weekends before, Scarlett Johanssons Rough Night opened to $8 million domestic. Not even Dwayne Johnsons constant Twitter chatter could save Baywatch from flopping over Memorial Day weekend, and a similar story applied a few weeks prior to Amy Schumers Snatched. Four R-rated comedies so far this summer, and four less-than-stellar openings where did the appetite go?
Some studio execs have pointed to the growing role that Rotten Tomatoes plays in driving buzz on social media. A swath of negative or even mediocre reviews, the argument goes, could make a potential viewer reconsider buying a ticket, which is more expensive than ever. When looking at the movies that have underperformed this summer, the RT scores are middle of the road at best Snatched (35%); Baywatch (20%); Rough Night (48%); and The House (16%). Compare that to comedies since The Hangover (79%) that have posted the highest earnings for R-rated comedies 21 Jump Street (85%) and its sequel (84%); Bridesmaids (90%); and Neighbors (73%). Another way of stating the theory: Movies that arent considered high-quality by critics tend to make less money.

Oops, I put the URL where the title was supposed to go.
Why drive to a theatre, pay too much money and sit in an uncomfortable seat when one can find so many excellent choices at home? It seems quaint, but not terribly appealing. Technology has moved on. Old Hollywood has yet to comprehend.
Captain Obvious would agree.
That’s it, you are now going to be banned.
Bummer. :P
Big, effects-laden blockbusters? OK, makes sense to want to see it on the big screen. But comedies, and bad ones at that? Why shell out the money?
Yeah exactly. It’s makes no sense to spend so much money to see a small scale movie on the big screen when you can rent it for a couple of dollars.
Good points. Go to the theater only when the big screen and sound system really add to the experience. There are web sites now that give evaluations of the 3D experience as well so you don’t get stuck with the more expensive tickets unless they are worth it.
Ooooh, a new movie that shocks you with sex and bodily functions!! So smart and fun!!
What do those 4 flops have in common? The actors are all huge Trump haters: Amy Poehler, Will Farrell, Amy Schumer, Scarlett Johannsen. They’ve all spoken hatred towards the President. Even The Rock took the politically correct route when forced to denounce Trump. Maybe other faux comedian/actors should take note?
Why go to movies to watch actors that openly hate you. The only films that seem to be doing well are the CGI heavy sci fi and fantasy films where people watch the CGI and. Not the actors
R rated comedies tend to appeal to males between the ages of 15 and 35. None of these sounded like they had plots that would do that. So, they flopped.
Liberal scum and their debauchery. Ho-hum.
That's part of it. I would go to a movie with these coup enablers if it were a good movie. The problem is the movies they are so full of political correctness, preaching instead of telling a story, and special effects instead of great scripts. And then all the tokens...gays that add nothing to the story, minority representation where it doesn't fit, correct speech instead of honest dialog. The world's pretty bleak. We want to be amused, uplifted, entertained, informed by movies that provide us a nice alternative for a few hours.
There.
Fixed it for you...
That’s most likely the reason.
I’ll bet they’re angry that they can’t control word of mouth too.
And I am of the age where everyone under thirty looks like a high school student.
