These Servers Can Tell How Much You’ll Tip Just by Looking at You

The minute you walked in the joint, I could tell you were a man of distinction — a real big tipper.

Granted, today’s crop of servers at the city’s restaurants are probably not humming anything close to this old standard, but experienced waiters and waitresses say that they usually know how much they are probably going to get tipped as soon as a customer walks in.

“Generally, men tip better than women,” says Meleck Verbay, who tends tables at Le Midi, an East 13th Street French restaurant where dinners range up to $50. She says that she “hates to generalize,” but adds that the gender tipping gap can get pretty wide, with men usually tipping about 20 percent (and occasionally as much as 40 percent) while women can go as low as 15 percent, or even 10 percent.

Why are women such stingy tippers?

Women are generally more judgmental about service. When I'm out with male friends, they get irritated about poor service, but don't correlate that to the amount of the tip. My women friends do. I do. I am very generous to friendly smiling service, but don't feel like being taken for granted and express it in the tip.

Costco’s steaks are amazing. Neither of us knows how to grill, or cares to know, so I do it on a Cuisinart electric grill. It’s delicious.

When it's not grilling weather, the way we do steaks is with a large cast-iron frying pan. The big trick is to let the steaks come up to room temperature before cooking (otherwise the center will be raw instead of pink). Cast iron is best because you can get it hotter than non-stick pans, and it retains heat better.

Put some thin pats of butter on the steak (not in the pan), and flip the steak onto the pan (butter side down). After a two minutes (more or less depending on thickness) put some more butter pats on, and flip the steak (use tongs, not a fork). You will get a perfect steak.

Outback has a deal/club, you eat 3 times, spending at least $20 each (within 6 months) and get $20 off your 4th.

Then about once a month or so they send you a special through E-mail. Something along the lines of $5 off.

Every few months, during a holiday period, they offer gift cards with a 20% bonus card. For every $50, you get a bonus card of $10 (Bonus card Usually has to be used in 6-8 weeks)

With a little planning, you can cut the cost down substantially.

The other night in Charlotte at a Waffle House Danny Wahlburg had an $82.00 bill and he left a $2000.00 tip. Was in town for a concert with whatever the name of the singing group is that he and his brothers do.

Will give it a try that way. Have done it in cast iron before but the splatter is a mess. This method might have less liquid so less splatter.

There’s no oil involved, so there should be no splatter.

Use the heaviest cast iron pan you have, and get it very hot to sear in the juices.

Maybe women tip less because they often do the same sort of work at home, where it isn't particularly valued.
