NY Times reporter accuses white women of racism on city sidewalks

The New York Times is facing blowback on social media after publishing an essay by an African-American reporter who accused white women of racism for not ceding space on city sidewalks to black men.

In a Wednesday essay titled "Was That Racist," reporter Greg Howard singled out white women for forcing him "off the sidewalk completely" when walking towards him, not allowing a straight path.

"In seven years of living and walking here, I’ve found that most people walk courteously — but that white women, at least when I’m in their path, do not," Howard writes.

Open a door for a young white or black woman. Wait for acknowledgement. Let me know how that works out.

You get a "thank you"?

At least in my experience.

My husband holds doors as a matter of course and I have never heard anyone say anything but thank you.

“In my father’s world a gentleman always cedes right of way to a lady. “

Your father sounds well raised, but in response to a gentleman ceding the right of way a lady should acknowledge that politeness with a nod or other gesture. They shouldn’t just continue like a juggernaut.

What an ignorant oafish puke. Doesn't he know that well-mannered men are supposed to allow a lady to pass or to walk first through a door, and that men are supposed to walk on the side of the sidewalk nearer the street if they are walking in tandem with a lady? Not only is he ignorant of common manners, he obviously has persecution issues of acts committed against him which exist only in his own head.

“I have always been suspicious of white women.”

Good policy which should be applied to all women. B*tches be crazy. :-)

Lately I’ve gotten the impression that MLK, Jr. was all wrong. We aren’t supposed to live in a color-blind society; we’re supposed to live in a color- aware society.

Oh, I HATE cell phone culture. They don’t even look up when they cross streets, like they think they’re safe in their little bubble... fools.

I'm right there with you with hating "cell phone culture". It's like people with their stinking cell phone plastered to their face are exempt from manners, from observing social niceties, from exercising elementary caution (as in looking both ways before crossing streets), and regard live people as mere distractions from what's really important--that little piece of plastic.

Yesterday, I was sitting outside with my neighbor, watching her adorable 2 year old daughter prance around the yard. Lately, her 2 year old has discovered the joys of waving at people and saying, "HI!" "Hi", "Hi", "Hi", her little reloader works at top speed. This young man with the aforementioned plastic face accessory totally absorbing every molecule of his attention walked by. The 2 year old jumped up and down, furiously waving and saying, "HI!" He remained oblivious, to her great frustration. Finally, I shouted at him, "Hey, the little girl is saying HI!" and he finally looked up, startled to be back into the real world. He smiled at the little tyke and she was mollified. How pathetic he was, not even responding when addressed.

The sidewalk dance is a subject yielding much truth.

Groups have their own internal social dynamic. You don’t want to step back when you are the person closest to the oncoming pedestrian because that would make you the weakest member of the group.

People on their phones are another matter entirely. I say “Watch where you’re going, please” about five times a day. Walking toward a subway stop during rush hour is like facing a horde of buffalo who haven’t been fed for days.

I have to say “Don’t back up any more, please” about three times a day. This is more common with tourists, who haven’t yet learned that there is always someone behind you.

I dislike it when people cut me off, from front, left, or right. Sometimes it is a near miss, or startles me. Also, fast-walking couples who are chatting have a tendency to split up in order to walk around someone but keep yelling at each other as if the person were an object.

Yet in 99.99 percent of cases, the sidewalk dance is an exercise in courtesy and interaction. It’s graceful and sensitive. Those are the ones this guy should notice. We have to ignore the clods in all walks of life. Most of the time we are awake and aware humans. It’s a beautiful thing. No words are necessary, no “excuse me” or “thank you.” We silently know the rules.

Greg Howard is making the case to deport Greg Howard to Africa where he won’t have to suffer through the indignities of living with white people.

I will bet that the same author will write, in about 10-15 years, about how racist whites are for moving aside as he walks towards them. "They don't want to be near me? They think I'm going to rob them? Their racist reasons are unclear, but their racist impulses are not."

WE are the real problem here, because WE accept this nonsense and try to ignore it and go on about our lives and trying to be productive... and thus we get more and more of it, with each passing year. There should be far more public outrage at the incessant damned-if-you-do-damned-if-you-don't nonsense from the Progressives.

Local high school had black kids walking down a four lane street blocking traffic.

I dive an F150. They all get out of the way when I crest the hill. Never move for a Prius.

Stopped when an older former military black man stopped, got out, and yelled at the young ladies.

I think this is the appropriate time to discuss a respectful and total separation.

Not out of anger or hatred, but rather as an acknowledgment that 2 very disparate cultures will never come to an agreement on the proper use of a sidewalk, but really it’s about courtesy.

It’s best if we just go our separate ways.

They’re being taught and coached to do this, no doubt under the guise of somehow combatting racism but quite honestly they’re not combatting it, they’re creating it.

It was right after Ferguson. They were (and I quote) “Claiming the street”.

It is a busy street. One kid got hit.

I did laugh they ALL moved when my truck came. Something about a big F150 crew cab with towing mirrors and a NRA sticker said “Please move”.

I’d never seen that cartoon, but I’ve been the victim of slow walking women. Not racism but a true societal problem.

So what this lady is really saying is that EVERYONE ELSE should get out of HER way!! ...and complains when people don’t, which seems to generally be “white women”. That said, it’s still probably bias on her part, discounting the number of white women that do get out of her way.

Hypocrite.

Why can’t Greg Howard move to the right of all people walking in a direct path toward him? I thought that the custom was to pass on the right. Does it really matter what the other person does or does not do, especially in a crowded place like New York city? Plan to move to the right of everyone coming toward you and save the blood pressure spikes of getting furious over petty nuisances.

“Notice I said lady and not woman. There is a difference.... “

Puzzling comment.

Please explain to me how you can tell, walking on a busy sidewalk,if a woman is a “lady” or not?

.
