By the time Labor Day weekend wraps, summer box-office revenue in North America will end up being down nearly 16 percent over last year, the steepest decline in modern times and eclipsing the 14.6 percent dip in 2014. It will also be the first time since 2006 that summer didn't clear $4 billion.

Went to the theater for the first time in 5 years. I regret it.
Why pay $15/ticket and another $15 for a small bag of popcorn and a watered-down soft drink to see a CGI-loaded movie of which you forget the plot by the time you get back to your car?!?
In a year or so it’ll be in the $5 DVD bin at Walmart.
People will not pay to see bad, politically correct, navel gazing movies. Yet there is always a market for dopey action fantasy movies with lots of special effects especially in Asia.

I bet they used actual data for Gore’s movie. If they were to feed the adjusted figures into “box office revenue models”, they’d realize that this summer was actually the best box office in history. And that’s just by “correcting” Gore’s box office results. If they did the same for all movies they probably took in more money than all the wealth on the planet. This summer was a huge success according to the models so don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. /sarc
I’ve gotten into the “Hydraulic Press Channel”.
The success of Mad Men and Breaking Bad on AMC and all those shows on Netflix and Amazon Prime has resulted in this: higher production value TV shows of nine to twelve episodes per season. And that has actually provided a lot of work for the people in Hollywood.

Hollywood has devolved into making animated comic book movies. Executives are realizing that illiterate, uneducated people around the world will pay to see mindless , special effects laden action movies. They won’t pay to see politically correct, navel gazers with dopey plots.
I go for the crappy parking, the lines to buy a ticket, the over-priced concessions, the sticky floors, the overly-loud commercials, the previews of movies I have absolutely no interest in, and the people around me that won’t stop talking and/or answer their phones in the theater.
You just can’t duplicate that experience at home.
Yes, the movies suck!! But they are so awful because of the lack of imagination of narrow-minded leftist Hollywood types!!!!
Saw a few $7 matinees. Three, that’s it. Wonder Woman, Spiderman, and Planet of the Apes. If I saw another one, I’ve forgotten about it.

A night at the movies for 2 easily runs $50 for 2 people (tickets, parking, popcorn and soda). You end up sitting in a theatre having to listen to others “whisper”, the occasional phone lighting up, getting kicked in the back of the chair by the bored child behind you. If you have to go to the bathroom, you cannot pause the movie. Or, you can go home and put on your comfy clothes, snuggle with your honey, eat whatever you want, pause for bio breaks ... for a fraction of the price. On top of all that add in that most of what is coming out now is agenda driven crap ... and why GO to the movies?
Good! Hollywood can destroy itself with its own internal moral rot and decay. Good riddance!
My wife loves to watch the old Rosanne episodes. By todays standards that show actually taught some real, live family values.
And the roller on the front of my 46” rider mower broke so I went to amazon prime friday after work, found it, hit add to cart, hit checkout and it arrived yesterday.
I live deep in rural KY. That kind of service makes it unnecessary to live in a city to get even the most obscure stuff.
Yep. Game of Thrones is the most popular TV series in the English-speaking world right now. The first six seasons had ten hour-long episodes each costing about $10 million to produce. This resulted in essentially a ten hour movie that cost about the same as a two hour movie and was far more enjoyable in terms of intricate storyline, depth of character development, hidden easter eggs (those little details caught on repeated viewings) and on and on.
And taking it all in over time on a massive HDTV home theater from the comfort of your couch, Hollywood can't compete with this.
Streaming has brought on a renaissance to television right now. It's the best it has ever been as a medium. Theatrical releases can't compete, which is why there are so many mindless comic book movies aimed at teenagers who just want to get away from their homes for a few hours.
I like KDramas, because they are usually about 16 1-hour episodes, so it’s easy to digest them in a two-week period.
These lower budget movies won't likely be ‘blockbusters’, but studios won't lose their shirts because they won't have to pull in at least $100,000,000 to break even. It's way past time for the film industry to start being creative and original rather than spending a ton of money on 'stars' and special effects - particularly in the context of their incessant remakes.
That said, as we all know, the film industry is also suffering the effects of people getting sick of having Hollywood's political agenda pushed at them.
