Prevent Mosquito Bites (While Traveling)
CDC ^ | CDC

Posted on 09/22/2017 7:27:52 AM PDT by Tilted Irish Kilt

Mosquito bites are bothersome enough, but when you consider risks, like getting sick with Zika, dengue, or chikungunya,
it’s important that you choose an insect repellent that works well and that you feel comfortable regularly using.

Protect yourself when traveling: Learn about country-specific travel advice, health risks, and how to stay safe by visiting CDC Travelers’ Health website.

Use insect repellent: Use an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellent with one of the following active ingredients.
When used as directed, EPA-registered insect repellents are proven safe and effective, even for pregnant and breastfeeding women.
DEET
Picaridin, also known as KBR 3023, Bayrepel, and icaridin
Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) or para-menthane-diol (PMD)
IR3535
2-undecanone

Cover up: Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants.
Keep mosquitoes outside: Stay in places with air conditioning or that use window and door screens.
If you are not able to protect yourself from mosquitoes inside your home or hotel, sleep under a mosquito bed net.

Learn more: Travelers can learn more about mosquito bite prevention in this fact sheet[924 B](available at the CDC website).

People talked about using that 30 years now (that I know of). But, my dr’s have never referenced it to me when discussing mosquitos and using an organic element.

I’ve had good luck with bug-repellent clothing by Exofficio (exoficcio.com, also available at sierratradingpost.com).
It’s worked well for me in the northeast US. I can only assume the clothes will work in tropical areas.

For exposed skin I like Picaridin products. “Off” makes a spray, or at least, they used to.

Have not had very good luck with citronella sprays, or the Avon Skin so Soft variations, but I know they work well for other people.

If you don’t wish chemicals, try the essential oil Lemon Verbena. Mosquitos hate it and people think it smells nice.

Get a small spray bottle and just put 30-40 drops into the bottle filled with water. Spray every exposed skin except eyes. This is super fast and will last about an hour or two. As long as you still smell it on your arm, the mosquitos won’t bug you.

If you are out for a whole day, you will need to make up a cream to apply that lasts longer. Can try putting the drops in a tin of coconut oil and pure shea butter. Experiment. Coco oil is of course oily, and shea butter is thinker and harder to mix. Which is why using both and putting in a little cream jar (found at Whole Foods and Sprouts in the essential oil aisle) is convenient for you.

My kindergartener is allergic to mosquito bites, so this lemon verbena is what we use. Right now we don’t have much exposure but we used to live near a pond and it worked so well.

Why would skin so soft be considered organic?

BHT

Isopropyl Palmitate

Dicapryl Adipate

Dioctyl Sodium Sulfosuccinate

Also, its fun at camp sites and watch mosquitos land on your boy scout uniform and they curl up and die on you.

We used to ride our bikes in the cloud of DDT behind the fogger trucks just to watch them drop dead out of the air around us.

An all body tick suit helps. They use them on African safaris.
