NFL ratings are off 11 percent this year

NFL games aren't scoring a touchdown with viewers so far this season.

Through three weeks, viewership for national telecasts of NFL games is down 11 percent this season compared to 2016, the Nielsen company said on Tuesday.

Nielsen said the games averaged 17.63 million viewers for the first three weeks of last season, and have dipped to 15.65 million this year. The Nielsen figures don't include many of the Sunday afternoon games that are shown to a regional audience, but not a national one.

It's evident that America's most popular professional sport is no longer the sure programming bet it once was. Theories abound attempting to explain the ratings plunge. Among them: Hurricanes Harvey and Irma diverted the public's attention. Before that, viewers may have been distracted by the nastiest presidential campaign in recent memory.

Weren’t they off about 10% last year too? That would make 20% since 2015. And now the players are going to wear pink shoes for month. That should help the ratings.

And that is 11 percent off from last year’s severely depleted ratings.

It’s completely laughable that earlier this week several “news” outlets were breathlessly saying that ratings are up. Sure. Remember the reports of Hillary out front and cruising to a win?

So is this 11% off of last year’s already 10% decrease or is it 11% off of an averaged figure over the recent past?

They changed the way the ratings are calculated at the beginning of the season, most likely to hide the drop in viewership.

Just before the season, Disney stopped reporting separate live viewership figures for linear TV and streaming, and started reporting them as a single number. Monday Night Football started reporting the “total audience” number reflecting both traditional TV watching as well as viewing via streaming services starting September 25th.
