First, statistics that are leaked or based on initial reports are often wrong and not because of conspiracy. A true conspiracy would have all reports the same. Counts of number of guns may differ based on location, say amount found in first room, amount found in second room, amount found in all areas of rooms, and finally amount he owned in his main home plus those in his possession. Also, how guns are counted. Are we numbering rifles, semi-automatics, hand guns. It is easy to see why there will be differing counts.
Fascinating in a sociological sense.
It’s also couched in a lot of self-congratulatory snark and sarcasm, which don’t speak well for the author.

I don’t think he was leaning out of the window. The shells fly sideways mostly.

That was my suspicion. Surely the internals of the gun could get crazy hot but an ejected round, sure, very hot to the touch but not set-stuff-on-fire hot.
However, did any smoke alarms go off in the hotel room? I fairly much buy the point about lots of smoke from that many fired rounds.
That was my first thought. I had a M1 Garand casing go down my shirt the same way, and it was hot enough to make me jump, but not hot enough to burn. I wouldn’t think they would burn a carpet.

The questions aren’t as clever as they are meant to sound.
#1. Listen to the audio. Most of the time he wasn’t shooting, so we don’t expect piles of brass from ten minutes of sustained fire. The brass in the photos looks about right.
#2. In full-auto fire, the brass won’t get as hot from the weapon as it would in semi-auto. The magazine doesn’t get hot, and the brass is only in the chamber for a tenth of a second. It will be hot enough to give you a mild first degree burn, but not hot enough to scorch carpet.
#3. The 72 minutes makes sense when you go through the decisions in that hallway. The shooter had stopped firing. They did not have armor that would stop rifle bullets. There could have been explosives inside that room. There were innocents in adjacent rooms. Waiting was prudent in the absence of an urgent need.
#4. Duplicate guns are not unusual. I don’t find having two identical ARs suspicious.
#5. The word “sniper” is being misused. He was hosing down an area target, which is what full-auto fire is for. As for the effectiveness of .223 at a distance, I would not want to be hit with even 25% of the muzzle energy at 400 yards. In fact, 400 to 600 yard is mid-range shooting, and the .223 is considered ideal for this range. [Google “.223 effective range” and you will get exactly that answer.]
Particularly with an area target where the murderer wanted to hit a crowd rather than an individual, questions of bullet drop become irrelevant. Particularly with time to plan and sight his rifles in shooting at his known and planned range from a bluff in the Nevada desert, questions on bullet drop become irrelevant.
None of this was hard. None of this required outside training or unusual skill. Breaking an AR into its upper and lower to fit them into a suitcase and bring them into a hotel is so completely routine that my wife, who has never shot an AR, could do it in one minute after watching a YouTube video. Setting up a webcam is not hard; nontechnical college students and welfare parents do it.
The conspiracy theories are silly. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar, and sometimes a horrific crime is as easy as it looks.

Imho, the media is a part of the problem.
The danger in this kind of crap for me that is circulating the internet is that when legitimate questions arise I will tend to discount them without giving them much thought.
Here is an area that I would like to know more. It seems to me that his pattern of gambling is similar to methods used to launder money. It also seems highly unlikely anyone makes money at a casino using electronic games. So, if he was laundering money what was the source?
He had two jobs that could have given him access to sensitive information. He worked for am airplane manufacturer and he worked for the IRS. Did he have top secret clearances?
If he began a short career in selling secrets was he ever caught? Apparently he came under FINRA scrutiny. Also, 5 million in gambling winnings would likely raise his audit potential. So if there are patterns of his behavior that are consistent with money laundering and he was never officially caught is this an indication that he may have been caught and was turned by our own government as an information source?
This could lead to a motive that some in the DOJ would like to avoid.
The motive still doesn’t make sense and there is reason to suspect that there was more to this guy than meets the eye and there are many conflicting stories. The media has stopped asking questions and moved on to Harvey Weinstein so I don’t mind if others continue to question the official narrative. I don’t think it’s dumb or malicious. It’s just part of any dialectic.

Skin is mostly water, hence the propensity to “burn”, especially when in contact with hot metal having high thermal conductivity.
Cloth/carpet doesn’t do anything notable at 212° or thereabouts. We regularly use the stuff to pull much hotter stuff out of ovens.
Ergo, the author is being pretty stupid when complaining about how hot shells are to the touch, but then complaining there aren’t outright burn marks on industrial cloth built to withstand such heat.

He has no objective basis for “thousands of rounds”.
He has 3-5 limited photos of a large crime scene.
He takes one data point about police response time, ignoring other known facts of earlier contact, and wonders why humans didn’t just barge into a violent assault.
He makes a big deal about two identical guns out of dozens.
He tries to impute the stupidity of ignorant reporters onto the shooter’s method.

Indeed. I briefly worked in the industry. One common technique is for the electronic games to report “hot players” to the staff - regardless of any reason why someone might be winning more than statistically normal. Anyone making substantial wins on electronic games will be deliberately bothered, distracted, or ejected. You’re NOT going to make a fortune on them.
I don't know the first thing about guns and I'm not looking for a fight, but are you suggesting that 300-400 bullets accounted for approx. 550 casualties?
My role in that bit of ‘truther’-style op-ed was to put up the whole text.
My only question about the event itself is, where was the monitor for the hallway cam? Seems like he had an awful lot to do. And if he’s got the camera in the hall, why? That suggests he had a plan to get out. If it were just a suicide mission, he wouldn’t need to know what was going on in the hallway. But OTOH, if it were not a suicide mission, he’d have caused the chaos, shot a bunch of people, then bailed out before anyone reached the room. Unfortunately, he’d rented the room, so it would then become a manhunt.
Best guess is, he had not thought things through, was under the influence of prescription and/or street dope, and wasn’t too bright in the first place.
The alternative is, he never fired a shot, and two others were present; or at least one other shooter was present, who kept an eye on the camera monitor, and perhaps was trying to shoot the tanks, then capped the patsy.
