Despite the media’s best efforts, the biggest and greatest bully-pulpit in the world is the office of the Presidency. The Donald can draw the attention of the world in any direction he chooses to... And if he directs his anger toward something people will notice and they will respond.

When Goodell came out swinging after President Trump criticized players who disrespected the anthem and the flag it was a mistake. That mistake was then compounded by the owners locking arms in unison with those same players who disrespect the country that allows them to be among the richest people in the world because they play a sport for entertainment.

Their bottom line is now taking a beating and that will not do. The owners are now in full agreement with the President and this business of taking a knee during the anthem is going to become old hat in a rather rapid manner. The lesson that should have been delivered by Goodell to Kaperdink the very first time he performed this stunt, will now be delivered to those who should know better... And if they fail to adhere they will be suspended and fined.

Sadly, this could have all been nipped in the bud if that had been done to Kaperdink in the first place... Who knows, he may have even still had a job if he had been suspended or fined for being a moron instead of being allowed to embarrass the NFL on a weekly basis. Now he will never work in the NFL again.

Kaepernick starting kneeling after losing his starting job.

The kneeling was his way of dealing with defeat and getting back at the NFL.

As starting QB... They were still paying him and if he lost a game paycheck or two, that kneeling would have come to end rather quickly.

What you say may be true. But the reality in the larger world of former and present NFL fans is that Dungy is liked and respected in a way other former coaches are not. His Christian testimony has a lot to do with that. His Christian language and behavior has a lot to do with it.

I personally like Mike Ditka ... almost as much as Buddy Ryan or Ron Rivera. But Ditka could not be a successful NFL commissioner. And Jimmy Johnson is a joke.

The NYT article has two horrible flaws in logic--if the NFL buys into it they will be burnt toast forever.

Fallacy 1--Correlation is not causation.

Yes, Trump attacked the NFL and yes, many fans boycotted the league. However, Trump was not the _cause_ of the boycott, he was just a part of the outrage shared by many fans.

Fallacy 2--Length of outrage on some issues is a predictor of length of outrage on every issue.

The NFL snafu is unusual because sports teams and their fans normally have a very close relationship, almost like a marriage. The league violated that trust, and has become a serially cheating spouse at this point by linking itself with radical black racist public policy positions. While some fans may forgive most will not, and this damage is beginning to look long-term and perhaps permanent.

Correct analysis would be:

The NFL needs to ignore this article, work to restore the bond with its fans. They can start by firing people--starting with Goodell, then removing some owners, managers and players from the league.

Since Mr. Trump’s remarks, though, many of his supporters have changed their attitudes.

I had fragments of information about the NFL and only a vague sense of what they were about - their crony-capitalism, their insider/leftist/controlled media outlook, and their leftist players. I had no idea how deep their problems were.

Trump ripped the lid off that. As leftists like to say "he simply started a conversation."

Any entity which decides to get into politics will find that it's going to antagonize a large portion of the country. In the case of the NFL, they decided to antagonize the large portion of the country that mostly makes up their fan base.

Let’s hope the BLM/NFL Slum Dog Millionaires keep kaeperniking until there is no NFL. Maybe that will save the NBA and MLB. Yes the NBA is cut from the same pile of shiite but I hate to see two major businesses go down and the NFL has already volunteered to commit suicide to prove how much they hate White America.

The NFL sealed it for me with that last Beyonce militant anti cop superbowl stunt. Still wish she would have fallen on her butt back then. If the NFL condones gangsta crap, why should I watch?

they need to replace the commissioner yesterday.
Clearly.
Replace with . . . Tony Dungy . . . Condoleeza Rice [or a respected former player].
Those are IMHO inadequate replacements. What the NFL needs must get is a commissioner who will represent the fans and be respected by the players. There are IMHO two interesting possibilities:
  1. Michael Jordan: Not a football guy at all. but as a superstar of professional sports - and as a black Democrat - he would instantly command respect from the players. What the fans get is a black Democrat who they always liked and respected and who pointedly refused to allow politics to be associated with his brand as an athlete. (when challenged about that he replied, “Republicans buy sneakers, too”).

  2. Vincent Papale. Vincent who? Papale - they made the movie, Invincible, starring Mark Wahlberg, about him. Papale is white and old, and maybe not the choice to relate to the black Democrats - but he would be the representative of the fans par excellence. He was a fan long before he became a special teams player for the Eagles. Black Democrat players were, in effect, the establishment which he broke into by making the Eagle roster. Even the “never NFL” former fans would relate to him because of that.

This nonsense started over a year ago, and Goodell is just now figuring out that it’s bad for the NFL.
Where did they find this guy? In an alley behind the Mission swilling vodka out of a jug?
Maybe he could get a job as a GOP-e special investigator. Or FBI director/US AG.
He’s as thick as a brick.
