Hmm. Sounds like the start of a joke. A man was walking down the trail when a little Mexican man approached from the opposite direction. The man asked, “Hola, amigo! See any wildlife today?” The Mexican man replied, “Nothing but a teeny, tiny rattler, vato.” The man continued on and some ladies approached. He asked them, “Have you seen a rattler, ladies?” They giggled and said, “Oh, we saw it. But, it couldn’t have been more than a garter snake!” The man continued on and saw a very stern park ranger. He asked the ranger if he’d seen any snakes, and the ranger replied, “There are no snakes in this area. Now, zip your fly before I have you arrested!”

The only good snake is a dead one.

His death saddened his friends and loved ones

Weird wording. People don't proof read anymore.

I was buzzed by a rattler earlier this year while hiking a canyon in the Anza Borrego. My wife, who was behind me, yelled “snake!” I came to screeching halt, and the beast crossed the trail right where my next step would have taken me. Didn’t have the means to kill it, and it was moving fast in any event.

The poison destroys any flesh it comes into contact with. So a bite on the neck is likely to be fatal.

They make a snakebite vaccine for dogs. Fairly new. They will still be affected if bitten after getting the vaccine, but not as bad.

I live in the foothills east of Sacramento near Amador City, in the heart of gold country. I killed 11 rattlers around my house last year. Only three this year. One of the snakes had 13 buttons, (a big snake).

When I was about 12, I was on a nature trail in Boiling Springs state park (OK) with my buddy, the preacher’s boy.
We were warned to take shovels, “There might be a snake or two.”
Of course we didn’t start to notice them until about the halfway point. There were snakes everywhere! All kinds of snakes, big ones, little ones, some with triangular heads; many were aggressive, one or two coiled around small trees, hissing at us but mostly crossing the path, coiled and acting like they might strike.

We came across a troop of terrified Brownies huddled in a clearing, as scared as we were. Walking point for them, we managed to make it back to the parking lot. We must have killed at least a dozen. (Snakes, not Brownies.)
Brought back a couple big rattlers and put them in large glass jars filled with isopropyl alcohol for Show and Tell.
Man, snakes. We hates `em Precious.

" A friend was recently bitten by a pygmy rattler. Cost her 5 days in intensive care and 8-$5000 anti-venom shots.

CORRECTION, your friend was allegedly bitten by a size challenged rattler.

There’s a “What kind of Snake is This?” Forum on Facebook which has helped me learn more about identifying snakes and which ones are beneficial. But, man, you don’t dare tell them you killed one or you get raked over the coals. You “found it that way, poor thing.”

Someone killed a rattler near our cabin this last summer right before my daughter’s wedding and a lefty couple that was in attendance nearly lost it. We’ve got too many little kids in the family for me to consider doing otherwise.

The next time you find a rattler ship it to that couple.

"Wait. How can it hurt to suck the poison out?"

If you have any sores or injuries in your mouth you'll have a very bad day.

I am wondering about rattlesnake venom, I always thought they were hemotoxic, but just looked up and found this. So some rattlesnakes are neurotoxic as well, and seem to be getting more so. Thankfully I see no poisonous snakes around here. I am a natural tillie.

https://www.desertusa.com/reptiles/rattlesnake-bites.html

Rattlesnakes Bites
Symptoms

Most rattlesnake bites contain hemotoxic elements which damage tissue and affect the circulatory system by destroying blood cells, skin tissues and causing internal hemorrhaging. Rattlesnake venom also contains neurotoxic components which immobilize the nervous system, affecting the victim’s breathing, sometimes stopping it. Most rattlesnakes have venom composed primarily of hemotoxic properties. Baby rattlesnakes and the Mojave rattler are the exception; they have venom which contains more neurotoxic properties than hemotoxic which makes them very dangerous. The sea snake, coral snake, and cobra family of snakes also have venom with dominant neurotoxic characteristics. (Brown, 1997).

Current statistics have indicated that more rattlesnake bite victims are showing symptoms of neurotoxic venom than in previous years. This leads to the question “Is rattlesnake venom becoming more neurotoxic?” Reasearch is being conducted to understand why we are seeing more neurotoxic systems in victims.

Nice instructions.

But lone hikers in the desert or mountains or woods may not be able to make it to a hospital in time.

What then?

I was on Fakebook once. After I got through taking apart some of the flakes on political matters, I was feeling pretty proud of myself.
Until my wife asked me not to fight with people on her account. I guess it took her several days to unruffle feathers.
If snakes and liberals cross my path and hiss at me, I decrapitate them and let God sort them out.
Wooof!

Tragic, and I don't mean to minimize that by pointing out the reporters comment

Most news reports about fatal rattlesnake attacks in the Denver area tend to arrive in the late spring or summertime. But this year along the foothills, things have been different

Fatal snake attacks in the US range from 5 to 10 a year. So if you're traveling to Denver, it's not a Denver problem.

Also, not to minimize, but there's little information about the bite. As others have pointed out, allergic reactions are an issue. And location, anecdotally I've been told some of the worst bites are to climbers, face and neck being within reach. Another thread which I'll ping separately
