This is now on multiple hackers’ to-do lists.

What’s ALREADY going wrong is: a lot of packages are being stolen off porches, when recipients are predictably not around to receive them personally, and there’s nowhere else to have the package safely delivered.

Y’all got a better idea? You know when the courier arrives, they’re expected in a narrow timeframe, actions are recorded, and entry/exit time is noted. Anything more than “open door, drop package, close door” is immediately flagged and investigated, with lots of video & metadata proof of activity. Sounds like a win for many customers.

And no, you don’t have to use it.
I’ve heard plenty of such snark about many technologies we all use daily now. I remember the guffaws at “pay for french fries with a credit card? are you kidding? clerk will steal my number!” and now most here do without a thought.

Best cases will be those with a vestibule: Amazon Key opens outer door for secure delivery, while inner door stays locked. Might finally give me an excuse to enclose the front porch.

And there’s no way for a thief to just smash a window and step in. Right?

“Let’s say you are taking a bath and realize you have no clean towels but your smart phone is within reach. You go to Amazon,”

You are so NOT with it! :)

You just request it via Amazon Echo.

LOL!

My German Shepherd is on the other side of that door.

And sometimes her boyfriend comes over.

He’s about 100lbs of solid muscle and teeth. Very sweet.

But he hates the mailman. HATES.

What could go wrong?

“Sure. Technology never fails! No one ever writes flawed programs. No thief ever figured out a way to overpower the system.
No way, Jeff!’

Duh. Probably more secure than 99% of the existing front door locks!

Ping me when Amazon will tuck me in at night and read me a bedtime story.

Well, before lunch, I was pretty up to speed on these things. Then they went and started that interweb stuff. Today, if my life depended on ordering a pizza delivery without a phone, I’d starve.

“sign a deal w/the post office! Good deal for the inept PO!”

****

IIRC, every Amazon package delivered by USPS under this deal with subsidized with $1.46 of taxpayer money. Some deal.

When a courier arrives with a package for in-home delivery, they scan the barcode, sending a request to Amazon’s cloud. If everything checks out, the cloud grants permission by sending a message back to the camera, which starts recording. The courier then gets a prompt on their app, swipes the screen, and voilà, your door unlocks. They drop off the package, relock the door with another swipe, and are on their way. The customer will get a notification that their delivery has arrived, along with a short video showing the drop-off to confirm everything was done properly.

I guess all you youngsters don’t know about home milk delivery that lasted up until the 60’s.

During the summer everyone would leave their back door unlocked so the milkman could come in and put your milk, butter, cheese, etc. in the refrigerator for you.

In the winter they would just leave it on the porch, unless it was freezing, then it was back in the fridge.

Yeah? We also used to get potato chips delivered too. But one thing you could count on is that the milk man never came in and stole everything you had. You usually saw him in church on Sunday too.

Yes, do what FedEx does and have drop off and pick up locations at stores in town that have hours beyond normal workday hours where people who are not so lazy can go to pick up their packages on the way home from work.

Guess what? Alexa has a premium skill that won’t tuck you in, but it WILL read you a bedtime story while it plays relaxing sleep-inducing sounds in the background.
