The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds.

From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed, so feel free to post them at any time.

Greetings from Missouri. Beautiful day with sunshine and temp in the 60s-Hubby is setting forms to expand the upper patio. All is ready to pour for the green house.

We will get our first freeze tonight and the temp will be either freezing or low 40s till Wednesday. Then we'll have several 50 degree days, so maybe will get to pour then, if contractors don't solicit hubby for a job basement floor.

I brought in the peppers, and cut off a tomato branch that had some green cherry tomatoes and stuck it in water. Will be putting it in a pot to grow indoors, maybe.

Tried to dig potatoes, but back objected, so stopped that-. Still need to harvest lemon balm, and rosemary - may leave a little bit and cover with row cover to see if I can get a little more out of it.

I got the corn stalks pulled out and will take them to the compost heap, but will not be able to dig out the garlic bed yet. May just dump some potting mix on top of the bed and plant it that way.

Sciatica is so much better - thank goodness- need to get busy cleaning for Thanksgiving. Still can't sit for very long at the computer, and limit standing to 15 minutes, so I alternate between standing activities and sitting in the recliner or laying on the couch with a wedge support.

Hope everyone is doing well. Prayers up for all. Have a great weekend. God Bless.

Hi there. Not much left in the garden but 4 broccoli plants that are still giving us broccoli. It was our best garden year ever and now that I am indoors more I hope to get this photo thing worked out. Still have a lot of nice shots I would like to post. Looking at some grow lights for early spring and starting some plants indoors so they will be further along when we plant.
Augie - read about Rocket spending more of her time roaming around. Maybe she'll hang around.
Diana - I keep meaning to write you I tried your suggestion about freezing the fish in foodsaver bags and that they would keep 6 months. I tried it - got a 5 pack of rainbow trout at Costco and have taken 2 out of the freezer now and grilled them, works great and I can taste no difference. I'll have to try that with some salmon when the Copper River ones come in. Thanks for the tip. I am still so jealous you have a mule. :)

No gardening for many months. It snowed several inches yesterday and got down to 13F over night.

OK. I’ll add you to the list. Pings are usually late Friday afternoon or evening. Occasionally on Saturday, but no more than once a week.

We keep the thread going for at least a week before posting a new one.

I’ve got two 2ft. full spectrum and 1 2ft grow light that I don’t think is full spectrum.

I’m holding out for full spectrum LED’s, they use less electricity. Sometime over the winter hubby and I will agree. :)

This is the weirdest October I have ever seen. Some Autumn color, but the leaves are still mostly green and up in thre trees.

That’s what I have - full spectrum lights that use less electricity. The other one is a cheap deal that came from wall mart and hubby attached some wood to an old microwave cart and mounted it on that. It’s ok for lettuce or something.

I only use mine for a few hrs. after the sun goes down, or when it’s cloudy, since my patio door gets lots of sun during the day otherwise..

Well I have been sweeping leaves off the patio like crazy for quite a while. It does seem like the colors are muted this year though. Mostly brown. Not a lot of red or yellow like we usually have.

Persimmons were very dry this year - not at all juicy as usual. The fall wasn’t as wet as usual.

I guess we’re gonna hit 30F tonight - 31F tomorrow night - it’s usually about 5a.m. when it hits coldest here.

I harvested 31 green peppers (medium to small) last 2 days. 3 big Marconi Peppers. A couple Sweet Snacking Peppers and there’s some Jalapenos to pull.

I’m wondering if they can handle this and next evening - we get 56 or so on Sunday - I was planning on pulling the rest.

I harvested several branches of Rosemary from one pot and dried it in the oven. Had some on a cheese pizza couple nights ago. Need to crush the rest and store.

I already pulled the ripening tomatoes except for a few orange grape tomatoes.

Two days ago I yanked 4 big bushy poblano pepper plants. They have been loaded all summer. I’ve given a big bag away and sauteed and frozen a bunch. The plants were still alive and blossoming too. I got a half grocery bag full. Stuffed 4 of the biggest ones today with a mixture of ground beef, rice, parmesan cheese and cumin. I had scorched them on the gas burner first. Covered with a cheese blend and then baked, they were yummy. We have one ripe tomato left on the counter. One precious tomato out of hundreds this year. I was almost tired of them this year. Besides all the canned goodness I still have 4 of the 5 quart ziplocs crammed full of dried San Marzano’s. Since I am back on my Aim Small Cook Small program, my favorite way to eat these is to chop one and put on top of a half hard boiled egg with a bit of ranch dressing.

Indeed...the leaves are going right to brown, or falling while still sort of green.

It’s weird.

Nice - I grew most everything in pots so most of it was small - the WalMart Bush Early Girl yielded 80+ tomatoes - a few green ones still out there.

I just hope an hour or so as low as 28 maybe in the morning doesn’t do in what’s left out there. Mostly a few green tomatoes but several dozen grape tomatoes still going.

Are the exercises helping? I know they really helped me.

I don’t have sciatica, but before I started exercising I couldn’t sit at the dinner table long enough to choke down a couple of eggs.

I’ll have to have one foot in the grave before I stop doing my back and neck exercises now!

I like big big pots for some things, but at my age it’s getting to be just more work. I definitely thing we will not plant as many tomatoes next year! I don’t grow any cabbage but we just picked up 8 head and did our sauerkraut for the year. “Harvest” in mid January!

All done here, even the plowing. A few more honeydew fillets in the fridge and a couple more watermelons left. Been eating melons as fast as as we could for two months. All else has been put up for winter.

Not gonna wait for Thanksgiving to be thankful, I've already started.

To witness what the Good Lord can do with some puny seeds, dirt, water, sunshine and only a little effort on my part is still astonishing to me. Even after a lifetime of farming.

Yep, thankful. To Him.

I have starting picking strawberries from my ever bearing (Albion) plants. I sold eight gallons last week and have 10 gallons ready for the market tomorrow. I picked up 2000 more strawberry plants from Jimmy Witt Farms Wednesday that I need to get planted soon. My late squash and zucchini are starting to bloom, I spent most of today dragging out row covers to keep them going through this cold snap. The leaf lettuce and swiss chard are loving the cooler temps. Growing celery is still kicking my butt, thought I had found an Asian variety that I could grow here but its not working.
