In Ancient Art classes you could always tell the difference between the original Chinese compositions and the Japanese copies of the same subject by the vibrancy of line in the Chinese drawings. Their sculptures had that same subtle relationship.
Throughout history, the Japanese have stolen from or copied the Chinese culture, art, etc.
