First Lady Melania Trump visited a Tokyo elementary on Monday afternoon, where she learned about Japanese calligraphy, and learned to write the word 'peace'.
Mrs Trump visited Kyobashi Tsukiji Elementary School with Japan's First Lady, Akie Abe, the wife of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
About 300 children welcomed them with a school song before Mrs Trump posed for photos, shook hands and slapped high fives with kids.
In a calligraphy class, Mrs Trump wrote the first kanji character for the Japanese word for 'peace', as Akie Abe wrote the second letter.
Mrs Trump is accompanying her husband, President Donald Trump, on her first Asian tour, which kicked off in Japan.
On Sunday, the US and Japanese first ladies learned about the history of pearls at the historic jewelry shop, as part of her cultural program during the trip.
At Mikimoto's flagship pearl shop, they went upstairs to a 'hidden floor' of the building, reserved for VIPs, to talk over tea and coffee. No details of their discussions were released.
Mikimoto brought in two 'ama' divers who traditionally harvest pearls, clad in typical white costumes with big goggles and wooden buckets, to explain pearl farming to the US First Lady.
'Wonderful visit w/ Mrs. Abe today! Enjoyed conversation over tea & the cultural presentation on the history of pearls,' Melania tweeted after the meeting.
The first ladies then had a private dinner with their husbands at a Japanese steak house.

Her radiance comes out when she’s around the little children:)
It also helps if the teachers aren’t morons......
A first lady after my own heart!
That’s the hat I’m looking for to go with my Calvin Klein white down coat....cept mine probably won’t be mink and it will be white.
Yes, our lovely Melania is all about the children.
She appears to be enjoying herself - huge contrast with MOOOOOOOOOOchelle...
They must not be very strong.
Where’s all the ‘diversity’? /s
Oh! For Pete’s sake. Probably 95% of FReepers came out of public schools!
And a relatively small voice (in FR, not alternative media), at that.
I don't know the demographics, but I'd guess a fair percentage of us are boomers ... or there-a-bouts.
10+ years here before “boomers” time. That would make us the “silent majority.” Were we too silent? We watched the chaos of the sixties and spent many hours with relatives and neighbors discussing the state of the world. At the same time, we had no idea how much worse it could get, did we?
I would guess maybe less than 50% of us are pre-boomer...Wish we had a way to measure it...
LOL, good one Diana!
Silent, watched and talked.
I'm 69 and though a lot of my activism in the late sixties and early seventies was more left than right ..
(GASP ... YOU were hooked up with SDS and such ? ........... for a time, yes ........ THAT is probably why a lot of commentary here in FR seems so aware, if not knowledgeable)
.. That leftist experience gave me (and others) an insight missing in today's commentary(s).
I got OUT of the Army in '68 after three years RA. Never "in country" (overseas in Korea) and learned my leftist roots from the GI's I met coming back .. EXTREMELY angry and f'd up.
It was all an education I'm glad I had an opportunity to attend.
Drugs, alcohol and cigarettes took a serious toll on my body, my longevity, my life ... so all I have left are my thoughts articulated in cyberspace.
I have no problem with discussion and even correction ... my goal is to educate where I can and be part of saving the America I once took part in destroying.

Korea is the same way.
To be fair though, you cannot point a camera (or phone) at any Japanese kid without getting the peace sign.
I had exactly the same experience on a Yokohama to Tokyo subway. Very young kids dressed in uniforms so “cute” they made my teeth hurt, riding on the train. No adults with them. When they got to their station, they got off and went to school. Japan is different.
Throughout history, the Japanese have stolen from or copied the Chinese culture, art, etc.
Best. First. Lady. Ever.
Not in school, but if you take calligraphy after school, you usually will do it seated like that.
Those two photos tell you all you need to know about whether the President and First Lady are racists.
