One of the books I'm reading now is about Guadalcanal. In the beginning of the war, Navy gunners would practice by shooting up whales, porpoises, etc.

The CNO, Admiral King, put a stop to it, not out of concern for marine life, but for any war materials that might be needed from said marine animals.

I'm just thinking that the IJA aircraft might figure that elephants are useful to the British/Indians, and start shooting them up for practice as well as denying them to the enemy.

How successful was the disguise?
