College embroiled in battle with the Pentagon over an art exhibit with works from Guantanamo

A criminal justice college in New York City is embroiled in a battle with the Pentagon over exhibiting and helping to sell artwork by suspected al Qaeda terrorists at Guantanamo Bay.

John Jay College of Criminal Justice is displaying 36 pieces of art by Gitmo detainees but the Department of Defense wants the paintings and sculptures destroyed. The school is funded by tax payers.

Families of 9/11 victims were particularly upset to learn about the artwork. 'I can't understand how this college in particular would allow such a thing. Where's their decency? Where's their dignity? . . . It's denying and softening what happened. What's next, hanging up the art of John Wayne Gacy?' Michael Burke told the New York Post.

His brother, FDNY Capt. Billy Burke, died on 9/11 and went to John Jay.

The exhibit, titled 'Ode to the Sea: Art from Guantanamo Bay,' was curated by John Jay art crime professor Erin Thompson with archivist Paige Laino and artist and poet Charles Shields.

I don't want art destroyed, but I don't want former prisoners to profit. I guess I'd rather see this work stored somewhere for future psychiatrists to study.

Why did we allow terrorists to make "art" ?

I send out a congrats letter to all the artists, telling them they won the gitmo art contest. When they show up to claim their prize give them a whole bunch of little lead trophies.

Some of the conditional releases required these bas**** to take art to calm their souls. Guess what...it never works...

Burn the cr**. We owe them nothing.

How is this any different than selling and exhibiting the art made by Charles Manson, John Wayne Gacy, or Adolph Hitler?

How was the ship model made without access to knives and other tools?

Odd, the ships are all western types.
I guess the one was made in shop class?

Hitler was probably a better artist than most of these guys.

They didn’t. That stuff is terrible and a joke to call it art in any form ... paint-by-the-dots and glue-the-kit-pieces-together does not constitute art - even fourth rate art.

I would guess that PIF was correct that the ship was built from a kit rather than handmade. And I would agree, in that case, that that particular piece doesn’t constitute art.

He had an excellent grasp of scale and perspective, light and shadow. But, his people look like paper dolls and seem to be sort of levitating. But, then again, he always did have trouble with that people thing.

I had the same thought. I’m guessing that they were given images and told they could use them as inspiration/model.

Even with a kit, you need cutting tools to clean up the parts.
