#1: Consult an attorney admitted in your jurisdiction immediately. (S)he will guide you in your interactions with the police. Also, you probably have an excellent civil case against not only the taxi driver (not important, because he probably has no assets), but against the taxi company as well. There may be deep pockets at the company.
#2: Expect to have some psychological trauma from this. See an experienced counselor as soon as possible to help deal with it. The sooner you deal with it the better.

I often have this debate with my husband. Canadians, especially "Quebecois" (as my husband is), hate guns.
But I always tell him, wouldn't you want our 18 year-old daughter to be able to protect herself? He never has an answer for that.
