That last one is my tree! It’s not the ornaments she’s after. One of our relatives gives chocolates for presents and a big wire fence keeps our girl out of the presents.

My Labrador Retriever has never messed with the tree, or anything else, for that matter. Best Lab ever. Sweet as can be with everyone. And she retrieves the morning paper from the end of the driveway.

The dogs were never a problem; the parrot, on the other hand...

This was a green tree...

I’m not into pink or blue anything...

if its not red and green its not Christmas...

a bit of gold and silver to decorate the tree is good too...

pink and blue belongs on the ceiling...

and Im not getting up there to decorate it...

:)

Yes, but does she put it back together in the right order when she reads it before you do?

I raised a baby robin in our dining room and I was still finding places to clean years later.

our cat would climb up the trunk and then sit and peer out from the branches

Our "cow cat" (a sort of "Holstein-looking" b&w shorthair) was the first of our cats to have Christmas tree issues. She would make her way up the tree by threading up through the branches close to the trunk until she found a branch to her liking. Then she would sort of drape herself along the branch and adopt a "waiting for prey" attitude, though she didn't attack anyone. Unfortunately, she was fond of nibbling on ornaments and lights that were within her reach.

She was a good cat who wasn't demonstrative as a rule, but getting her out without destroying the tree or getting bit/clawed in the process was always interesting. She was only with us for six years until renal failure took her, but she made those Christmases memorable. We stopped putting up a tree some years ago, and it is just as well, because the current cat of the house is a male who is very affectionate and attention-loving, but somewhat ornery... I have a suspicion that if we DID have a tree up, his interaction with it would have me warning him that I was about to make him the topper in a direct and most uncomfortable manner.

Do you remember the fashion for pink or blue flocked trees?

My favorite - and closest - aunt & uncle always got a nice, room-filling tree, and they had some flocked ones that were gorgeous. Auntie had a set of pinkish lights and tasteful ornaments that she used as long as she was still putting a tree up at Christmas. In the 50+ years since, their tree(s) remain - in my mind - the "gold standard."

A different aunt & uncle had a well-remembered aluminum "tree" that was lit up from below by a lamp with a rotating "color wheel." It was gaudy - and now stylishly retro? - but I was fascinated by it. I remember worrying that their house would burn down because I had personal knowledge of how warm that lamp could get.

HA! That looks exactly like our cat used to do. :-)

I was raising about 3 clutches of lovebirds one year and just let them play in the tree while they learned to fly. Didn’t need ornaments, they were so pretty. Fortunately they were not adult lovebirds... those would have dismantled the tree in a matter of hours, stuffed the branches into their back feathers, and then spread them and the needles all over the house.

I was around 10 when those were popular and was always disappointed that we had an “ordinary” green tree when the flocked ones were so elegant. Today I prefer a green one, but I love the memory of those brightly lit in windows.

I visited a birding friend whose house ended a huge alley of green with rows of tall trees on either side. She described how it looked in the snow when it was covered with cardinals and blue jays. Like nature’s Christmas.

How come just about the time I forget about something hideous I get reminded of it?

“stuffed the branches into their back feathers, and then spread them and the needles all over the house.”

We raised them also. Unbelievable what they could stuff into those back feathers. They did keep us entertained.

Our 6 cats love foil. They’ve eaten a good deal of it off my solar oven. They eat everything. They climb everything. Nothing would stop them from destroying Christmas decorations or anything else. So, we don’t put up decorations.

Don’t get me wrong. They’re good cats and know to leave the usual things alone but let something new show up or something is in the wrong place and they’re all over it. My messy desk can be (is) piled high with papers but let one fall onto the floor and ATTACK! because it doesn’t belong there.

Then there’s the two dogs. The big one’s tail would have the tree knocked over in no time. The other one is blind and clumsy so would get lost and confused with a tree.

Had our first Christmas tree in four years last year as our old diabetic cat, Oslo, passed. It was a 16’ tall tree and was wonderful.

We stopped getting trees as Oslo loved to lay on the tree skirt and our radiant heated wood floors. The diabetes gave him a weak bladder in this specific circumstance...never any other time...

This year we have two new 9+/- kittens/cats (different litters) and one of them is a CLIMBER!

No ‘real’ Christmas tree this year...we do have a Charlie Brown Christmas tree that’s fun to have and Santa is giving us this tree for Christmas:

Should be fun!

Yes, but does she put it back together in the right order when she reads it before you do?

She hands it to me immediately because A) she knows I get to read it first; and B) she wants her treat. After I'm done reading it I don't care if she does or doesn't put it back together in the right order.
