In order to test potential A-10 Warthog replacements in rugged conditions, the US Air Force has flown Sierra Nevada A-29 Super Tucano and Hawker Beechcraft AT-6 Wolverine light attack planes from a dirt runway.

The planes took off and landed on the uneven dirt airstrip located in the Melrose Air Force Range training area, a part of Cannon Air Force Base, in New Mexico. The whole event, the takeoff as well as the dusty landing, was captured and shared on YouTube by AiirSource on Wednesday, 3 January.

The only thing they will never, ever do, is to make more A-10s. Arguably they “can’t” because the tooling has been scrapped and turned into fidget spinners made in China.

So, they take off and land.

How did they do with CAS under fire?

Agree ..... total BS , comes nowhere near a valid “replacement” to an A-10. Whoever even authorized this consideration needs to be jailed for wasting time and money. These 2 prototypes are just “Golden BB” bait IMO.

ah, the great military-industrial complex of the USA.

For nearly a generation now McPain and his cronies in military has been trying to destroy one of the most deadly, toughest, reliable and efficient killing machines and want to replace it with soda cans airplanes loaded with million dollars smart weapons.

I guess you just gotta keep feeding the BEAST

I would think if anything they could ‘print’ the parts and or tooling fairly easily with all the detailed information the must have on the A-10.

Sierra Nevada A-29 Super Tucano and Hawker Beechcraft AT-6 Wolverine light attack planes

Those are NOT potential A-10 replacements, unless they mean for the countries our military are leaving will fly them to replace the A-10s we're taking with us.

Whoever agreed to destroy tooling for the aircraft are morons.

I agree doesn't anyone think that either of these planes can match this?

That beast looks like Swiss cheese, and would still terrify jihadis on the ground.

Any ex or current pilots here? If so, what would you want most in an A10 replacement? Or any new plane for that matter?

LOL, today's generals dont seem to care about the people they command.

They take 1 look at this photo and think "hmmm, that aircraft is so unacceptable as it should have been destroyed so that we can buy new ones! After all, how am I to survive on just my Military Pension unless I get the Pentagon/Taxpayers to buy lots of new stuff?"

These are not replacing the A-10.

These planes are to augment the A-10 force (such roles as FAC think O-1 Birddog), and be used in smaller engagements where the A10 isn’t economical.

People get on the welfare momma’s and daddies and rightfully so, but we need start getting on the MIC when they come up with chit like this, replacing the A10 with something like this is beyond stupid, and I just studied some fighter planes for a hobby and I know that much.

These planes are not a replacement for the A-10 , they are a supplement to it.

These aircraft are cheaper to operate against Afghan style insurgents and Jihadi.

A-10 are often too expensive and are overkill for this mission.

If the military brass ever attempts this shit-sandwich replacement for the A-10 warthog then they should be hung for treason!
