Flu and stomach virus cases on the rise in North Georgia

Flu cases in North Georgia are on the rise.

North Georgia Health District officials are encouraging all residents six months of age and older to get a flu shot while there is still time.

Sherry Gregory, RN, North Georgia Health District Infectious Disease Supervisor, said:

“It is not too late to vaccinate against the flu. Flu activity is increasing throughout our area. We expect the flu season to reach its peak early this year, within the next few weeks, so it is important to get vaccinated now. Flu vaccination not only protects the person who receives the vaccine but it also keeps them from spreading the flu virus to others.”

Health officials also said that it is extremely important for people who are at a greater risk of experiencing flu complications to get a flu shot. This group includes children under five years of age, adults 65 and older and pregnant women. It is advised that anyone who lives with or cares for a person who falls into this group also get a shot.

People who suffer from medical conditions such as asthma, chronic lung or heart disease and diabetes can also be at a higher risk of suffering from flu complications and are encouraged to get vaccinated.

“Flu vaccine is available at all our health departments in Cherokee, Fannin, Gilmer, Murray, Pickens and Whitfield Counties,” Gregory said.

Symptoms of the flu can include fever, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, cough, fatigue, and/or possibly, vomiting and diarrhea.

If any patients who fall into the greater risk category begin to suffer from any flu symptoms, they should seek medical attention immediately. According to health officials, this will allow doctors to prescribe medication that can help reduce the risk of complications.

North Georgia Health officials have also seen a rise in stomach virus cases.

Stomach viruses are highly contagious and symptoms can be serious for people such as young children and the elderly.

North Georgia Health officials said that taking precautions, like the ones listed below, can help reduce the spread of the flu and stomach viruses:

Get a flu shot – this will protect you against the flu virus, which will be especially critical if you are infected with some other virus. Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub. Try to avoid close contact with sick people. While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them, especially avoiding healthcare facilities and long-term care homes. Avoid having children inside healthcare facilities and long-term care homes to protect them from catching viruses and to prevent them from spreading viruses to the people who are there. If you are sick with flu-like illness, the CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. (Your fever should be gone for 24 hours without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.) Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way. Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs like the flu.

So I'm home with the wife and one of my kiddo's who are dealing with the Flu. Now I'm exhibiting symptoms. We never get the Flu shot or mist and this is the first year my daughter has gotten the flu. The doctor at our clinic said yesterday that it's currently at Epidemic levels in GA. In fact the pharmacies in our area are completely out of the Tamiflu, no biggie since my cost on it is a whopping $165. My daughter was on the border of the 48 hour window so she just got antibiotic and a cough medicine she hates. My wife got the last Tamiflu from Publix by our house.

My question is how does this reoccur annually? I mean if it disappears from the planet at some point every year how does it happen over and over and over again. I can tell this will be a fun weekend.

No offense....but if you had the flu, you would not be typing. It is THAT bad.

This year the flu is very virulent. A local hospital has been at capacity for going on a week. It’s mostly old, or sick. And babies.

I thought the flu shot did not work this year, also heard the people from South of the Border was bringing it back after their trip to the Home Country for Christmas. Do hope you get to feeling better though.

I understand your comment yet I’m just now starting to exhibit the same symptoms my other family members are/had been experiencing. You are correct too, my daughter slept 14 hours last night, my wife has been parked on the recliner binge watching something on netflix. I’m heading to the Dr. tomorrow for sure. Hopeful it’s just a cold for me but being the primary caregiver and not in the healthcare industry I imagine my lysol and other prevention methods are mediocre.

Could be the culprit but after researching a bit I guess it originates in Asia via birds and pigs. I wonder if it was from the bacon we ate last weekend lol.

Had the flu on Christmas. Had some Tamiflu stashed away and was better in three days. Then a loved-one died and jad to deal with that. Was run down. Now I have a stinking head cold.

More flu shot propaganda.
Keep your kids out of school if you can - it’s supposed to be in the 20s & 30s next week again in N GA.

Vitamin C, Vitamin D and bundle up if you have to go out.

If you talk to other humans...you are vulnerable. And, as much as you wash your hands, someone that used that door you just went through did not.

It’s just part of being alive. Something always wants to kill you.

I got the flu shot in October. I have the flu now in January.
Been out of it for the past two days, only starting to feel a little better.

Basically alternates between north and south hemispheres and new strains are always evolving/swapping genetic material with other virii. Influenza doesn’t disappear — there is always an active area of infection in some population (includes animals).

Adrian Monk comes to mind.

It’s a jungle out there
Disorder and confusion everywhere
No one seems to care
Well I do
Hey, who’s in charge here?
It’s a jungle out there
Poison in the very air we breathe
Do you know what’s in the water that you drink?
Well I do, and it’s amazing
People think I’m crazy, ‘cause I worry all the time
If you paid attention, you’d be worried too
You better pay attention
Or this world we love so much might just kill you
I could be wrong now, but I don’t think so
It’s a jungle out there

My almost 101 YO mother sometimes gets two flu shots — she forgets she got the first one and goes to a different pharmacy and gets another (isn’t really harmful but we try to catch it). Two years ago we all got the the flu except for her.

Got a Trader Joes near you? Or any good grocer......buy Chicken Stock or broth. Buy Chicken WonTons (in frozen section). Buy some frozen broccoli or spinach...your choice.

Bring a big pot of broth to a boil...add the frozen items and cook for about 3 minutes...VOILA....add some fresh garlic and ginger if you want, and it’s even better. Get/Stay well.

CDC estimated 10% effectiveness for the vaccine this year IIRC.

My son needed a physical for a wrestling tournament this weekend, so I took him into Northeast GA Med clinic in my town.

After waiting for nearly 4 and a half hours we got seen. The doctor we saw said that we looked ill. So after running a strep and other tests, it was determined that we were contagious.

No wrestling for us and a weekend in bed to get feeling better.

Been there. Done that.

Knocked me on my fanny for about 2 1/2 days, started to get functional again when round 2 started.

Started out as a cold when the stomach stuff kicked in. Never, ever had nausea like that. It was bad. (If morning sickness was like this I wouldn’t have had a second kid!)

Emetrol didn’t make a dent. Ginger tea helped a bit.
