Apple has already run out of replacement iPhone batteries (tr)

Angry iPhone fans will have to wait until March to fix their handsets, despite promises from Apple to replace ageing batteries.

The tech company previously admitted deliberately reducing the performance of older smartphones to extend their battery life.

It offered to replace the power packs in the iPhone 6 or later even if the devices passed Apple's Genius Bar diagnostic test according to an internal memo.

Customers have taken to social media to express their outrage at being told the firm has run out of stock and won't be getting more batteries in for at least two months.

News of the delay first emerged from internal documents distributed to Apple Stores and Apple authorised service providers.

Batteries for the iPhone 6+ are in particularly short supply, with a wait of 'approximately two weeks' anticipated for replacement batteries for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6s Plus, according to reports in MacRumours.

Batteries for other models like the iPhone 6s, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, and iPhone SE are expected to be available 'without extended delays' in most countries, the paperwork states.

Can't you get generic batteries?

Just make the phone with a easily replaceable battery by the user.

The big push will come in November/December. I want to extend the life of the device, so I am going to replace that battery as late as I can.

I went to the Apple store & got my new battery last week. They were busy.

Tried to make an appointment with the local Apple store a few weeks ago to have my wife’s iPhone 6 battery replaced and there were no slots available so I went on Amazon and bought the Homsum battery replacement kit (<$30) and swapped it out myself. Not for the faint of heart but there are videos detailing the steps and the only pain I had was dealing with those tiny screws holding down the heat plates.

There was a 4-6 week wait at my local Apple Store, so I opted to send it in. It should take a few days....I guess we’ll see!

That would take additional internal structure. SP makers are trying to cram more and more tech into an incredibly small space. Hence the removal of the 3.5mm audio jack. Then you’ve got the seams required for a replaceable battery. Top end phones carry an IP67/8 water resistance rating. 30 minutes at 1m depth.

Apple said that the $29 battery replacement was for a limited time. Why wait?

My battery was completely out of juice within about 2 hours of being unplugged, even if I wasn’t using it.

Apple makes good products. No questioning this.

But are they really worth the price differential?

BLU Vivo 8 cost: $248.99 (Prime)

iPhone X cost: $1,299.00 (NOT Prime)

I am not questioning that the iPhone X is a better phone in many aspects (but not all). But is it $1,050 better?

The point is this: if you pay $814 for an iPhone 8 or $1,300 for an iPhone X, you're going to jump through hoops to keep it viable as long as possible...that is totally understandable.

If you pay $200 - $250 for a phone, if it starts messing up after a year or so, you can just go get an upgraded phone without massive pain.

I suppose if you were a professional videographer, it would be worth the money to get the improved video. I honestly don't understand, outside of narrow professional reasons, why a person would waste the extra money? Can somebody explain this to me?

you have a compelling reason to switch given the state of your battery. My Iphone 6 battery remains close to new performance. Therefore it behioves me to wait as long as the Apple offer is valid ( which is a few more months )

Call me old school, but I tend to keep my phone a long time, you know the real way to 'protect the planet'. I don't care about scuba diving with my phone. Thus a easily replaced battery would be needed nice. Also allows for a spare charged battery as a back up.

On the topic of down sizing, how does one explain the iPhone plus models?

Waiting as long as possible is my plan too. Want to keep that 6 going as long as possible, the better to enjoy my headphone jack. :)

I also have an iPhone 6, which (knock on wood) hasn’t had any issue with the battery although after 3 years, it does seem it loses charge a bit faster the when new. Apple is supposed to release an update to the OS which will provide more details about the battery health. I’ll be interested to see what the status is on its battery.

The solution is to buy the iPhone 10 for $1,000 and be happy!
Then buy the iPhone 11 when Apple cripples the iPhone 10.

They don’t have any new batteries to give you and before they will replace your battery, you must take it to an Apple Store to have it tested. Mine tested as needing replacement. So, since my phone had recently been replaced under warranty, I called and told them that they gave me a bad phone and that I wanted a replacement. The phone with the bad battery was also a warranty replacement and was supposed to be a refurbished phone, the new replacement refurbished phone has a dark spot in the middle of the security lock screen where you put in your security code, so I am taking it into Apple to see if it is damage. I don’t think that they fully refurbish these phones.

They can do the diagnostic remotely; I had mine tested over the phone. Apple then sent me a prepaid box, and I sent it in. It is on its way back to me today, less than a week after I sent it in.

I’m getting a new battery in my old phone because it’s not under warranty.
