All Things Prepping, Simple Living, Back to the Basics [Survival Today, an on going thread]
vanity | 2/26/18 | CottonBall

I’ve been missing the vast amount of information on prepping, survival, camping, simple cooking, the old ways of doing just about everything – all the things nw_arizona_granny knew so much about and shared with us, along with numerous other posters with a vast array of skills and knowledge.

We have our various related-threads here, a recipe thread, a gardening thread, and even a prepper thread. They are all great and I don’t mean to take anything away from those and the hard work their owners put in.

But I was missing a place to talk about ALL those things, to get the camaraderie that we used to have on granny’s thread.

I learned how to can on those threads! The pressure canner was not my friend, I thought, but I bought one and stared at it for a month, intimidated. Then I read the directions for another month. But with the help and encouragement of posters on granny’s threads, I jumped in and now have my very own food storage room in the basement with lovely jars of shelf-stable meats, vegetables, and fruit. When we moved, I fashioned my food storage room – and insisted upon having a basement – from what I learned on her threads. Getting started gardening was from her threads. Making my own cleaning products….the list is endless.

So I thought I would take the chance and start another comprehensive prepper thread and see how it goes. I used to have granny’s ping list since I made one of the threads for her, but alas, with numerous computer changes, I cannot find it. So please pass this onto any posters you think might be interested.

We’ll just keep it running until..whenever. Granny created a new thread at 10,000 posts or so. I do like the idea of having ONE thread to go to – because often I cannot find or keep track of the weekly threads. I won’t be posting lots of recipes or tidbits myself – to any mods concerned about the size of this thread. I’d just like a place to chat, post questions, post ideas, make new prepping friends.

Here are granny’s threads, if anyone wants to peruse them:

nw_arizona_granny’s Thread #2

Composting is a great subject. I would love to have a beautiful big compost pile to use in my garden and in my pots.

All I know is you need to keep it moist and turn it often. That’s the problem I have, I’m not strong enough to do that and my husband isn’t interested in helping. I would love to have a place to put all the scraps from the kitchen. I know you also need to add some sort of base material like straw or hay I think. If you keep it moist and turn it, it will stay hot and kill any seeds that are in it. My pile usually ends up growing whatever weeds are in there :-(

This is the old usenet uncensored group. You can access the archives going way back (I think).

I'm not seriously into survivalism but it's a fascinating subject, and I lurked on this group for quite some time, learned a lot. I don't think I ever posted on it.

https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/alt.survival

I get ideas about things I'm interested in, digging a well, putting in a pump, earthships, making water safe with bleach and outdoor distillation methods, solar, wind, all sorts of things on youtube.

Have fun. Your Ball lids should still be ok, maybe the rubber seals degrade though. My son was heavily into prepping. If you put enough thought into it, there probably aren't many fail safe methods. But anything is better than nothing.

Your canning jars you can put dry beans and other dry things like flour, corn meal, etc. I'd put them in the freezer for 3 days to "prep" them. That's what I do with flour I buy at the store. The Orkin man gave me that tip years ago.

Also look how Russians freeze things for the winter in Siberia. And the video about Agafiya (sp?) and how her family survived for years in an extremely harsh environment. They fled for religious reasons.

Those books about edible foods in the woods and plains would be good, too.

Good luck!

That was my first canning experience. People on granny’s old thread walked me through it. I first froze beans and grains for three days To kill any eggs. Then heated them in the oven to a really really low temperature to drive moisture off. Then put the jars into the oven and got them hot, added the ingredients and then put the lids on. When I took them out and let them cool a vacuum was created, sucking down the lids.

It actually worked!

lol! piano wire...

See what neat and unique things come up on these threads? :-)

OK, what kind of things can I use piano wire for?

And I thought duck tape was the most important thing. I was excited when I found a bunch of peach duck tape on sale at Walmart the other day. It’s such a pretty color.

On Investigation Discovery, I notice that piano wire often is used — but probably not for anything you’re considering. ;)

here we are, TIK!

I don’t mean to take away from your prepper threads based on recent events. This is more of a daily how to thread.

Good video, good packing ideas. Haven’t weighed my bag but it is heavier with extra water.

I need some advice regarding disher sizes. You know, those things formally known as ice cream scoops? You can use them to scoop out cookies, meatballs, cantaloupe, anything that you want round and of a particular size.

I was planning on getting a set when I noticed there’s probably over 10 sizes. I don’t want that many! I was thinking #20, #40, and #60. Only because that’s what I read on some website, someone recommended those. I believe the larger the number means a smaller size.

Does anyone have any recommendations on what could be used for cookies, meatballs, scones... That’s all I can think of that I would use them for so far.

Sure thing!

Since I don’t have a ping list, I’m just adding people as they post. Until maybe the first 100 posts. Then people can beg me to take them off of it :-)

I was thinking of maybe pinging people once a week to the thread. Or maybe every two weeks. What do you think? Actually I think granny used to ping every 250 posts or so. Something like that. Maybe I’ll do it that way instead. Only when there is something new to read.

I’ve managed to acquire a bunch of random telephone poles looking for a new purpose.

Couple of thoughts I’ve had, redoing the garden, making a new coop and also toying with the idea of a bunker. Anyone do good things with old Telephone Poles?

I also thought about building some more fence, but i am not sure I want to split them into smaller posts.
