One of the hardest things to accept for all of us who want Donald Trump to be a one-term president is the fact that some things are true even if Donald Trump believes them! And one of those things is that we have a real trade problem with China. Imports of Chinese goods alone equal two-thirds of the global U.S. trade deficit today.
But while Trumps gut instinct is right, hes so ignorant about the facts, hes so easily swayed by the last person he talked to or by ill-considered promises to his base, hes so weirdly obsessed with protecting manly industries like coal, steel and aluminum that affect our allies more than China and hes built such a chaotic policymaking process and unilaterally surrendered so much leverage to Beijing that he cant be relied upon to navigate the China trade issue in our national interest.
For those of us who believe in free trade and that China and America can both thrive at the same time but who are convinced that China hasnt been playing fair and dont trust Trump to fix it, this is a critical problem to think through.

But partly right on this issue.
People, we really have a big problem with China's trade at the moment.
And it is getting even worse.
Trump lacks understanding so a lefty journalist will save us, FUNYT.
If there were ever a perfect example of lying equals stupid, it’s Friedman.
Two or three sensible comments, and then it’s yada, yada, yada time. Typical liberal.
Shaaaduuup! It's funny though, my wife listens to NPR, which I strive to tolerate, as little as my exposure may be, but when they were going on about the Tariffs, and went so far as suggesting that Trump, "just wanted to throw his weight around" , I "lost it". "He's trying to save the American steel industry!" I exclaimed. Excuse me.
It then occurred to me, that this was not acceptable to the left, or whoever you want to call them ... their doctrine says that economics rules, and if American steel dies, it dies.
So one might suppose, as a corollary, that "if America dies, it dies". I think that's about it.
That is some serious shooting the messenger.
Their hatred for Trump is palpable.
Because once Mr. Friedman helps you come to the correct conclusion, we'll notify the Universe and then work on how to break it to the President that the NYT Columnist is ready to issue their decree.
