I was with a small Marine detachment on Aberdeen Proving Grounds Army Base for my MOS training.

One night I forgot that I had guard duty and was reminded about 5 minutes before inspection by the Army OD. I ran like the dickens through grass and mud and got there just as they were calling everybody to attention.

I had mud up over my ankles on my boots. That night I guarded an armory that was about 8 miles out of nowhere.

Kiwi polish has an odd chemical property

When exposed to the Alkali soils found out on the lake-beds of the Nellis Bombing range, your boots will turn titty pink.

I still shine my shoes.

I have a pair of cordovan Florsheim shoes that my grandfather gave me about 1992. Good shoes. I wore them to Court recently and the Judge actually commented, from the bench, on how good they looked. Real cordovan leather. Quality shoes + shine and shoe trees = lifetime of use.

Side note: Those shoes are older than our most recent hire... I am now old.

A buff is enough!

Couldn't agree more. I like looking well-dressed, especially in professional environments, but after my enlistment I vowed never to spit shine another shoe.

Would you be talking about Footrot Flats? I visited NZ once and went to a sheep station there. I saw this herd of sheep coming over a hill being herded by a bunch of border collies. I immediately fell in love with that breed and got one of my own I had for almost fourteen years. See my profile page to see the cartoon character of the the dog. I miss my girl still and it’ll be three year this year she’s gone.

My dad still has a nice foot stool kit for polishing shoes.

We had one of those. Griffin brand, I believe. I saw the same model used by Don Draper in "Mad Men".

A breath of fresh air.

Yep. Shined many a shoe so the TI could see his teeth in the reflection.

Looks similar to our Blaze. He too was an Aussie.

Lost him about two years ago. A day doesn’t go by that I don’t think of him. He was truly my best friend.

The first photograph ever taken that included people (1838). The only person that isn't completely blurred is the guy getting his shoes shined in the foreground.

How many times a week would you wash and roll your hair?

I remember when we didn’t wash our hair every day :-)

LOL......how times have changed. We washed our hair once a week on Saturday.......now it’s several times a week it seems like. Now when my sister and I got into our teens we would wash our hair at least every other day and try and sleep in those torturous big rollers. Those were the days....;)

Here's another song that also talks (briefly) about shoe shining, and it takes a very different angle on the process.   (Based on these lyrics, I wouldn't have predicted a long and happy marriage there, but, who knows?)
"First Year Blues" - Hank Willams
(youtube song clip)

Now I've been married about six months,
Only six months you see,
The first three months, was all OK,
The last three is killin' me,
My wife began to hissin', she cut out on her kissin',
And then she failed to shine my shoes,
My shirts became a-wrinkled,
My pants with dirt were sprinkled,
And I took the first year blues.

Well then she started naggin',
She left the sink a-saggin',
With dishes piled up high,
The food upon the table, she said if I get able,
I'll cook something by and by,
Then I began to wonder, if I had made a blunder,
When I said I do, she must have read my thinkin',
Her eyes began to blinkin' and that gal broke in two.

Well I heard the dishes crashin',
and I began to dashin', gettin' out of sight,
for right there was my honey,
On who I'd spent my money, turnin' into dy - na - mite,
Then after she'd exploded, her meanness all unloaded,
And things began to simmer down,
I found myself a-bleedin', and very much a-needin',
Of stitches taken all around.

Well then she started cryin', I felt myself a-sighin',
And then I took her in my arms,
I was afraid to scold her, so I just gently told her,
She didn't do a bit of harm,
Now the first six months is over, and I am much the older,
And experienced with a wife,
If I can stand the next six, my friends all say I'll be fixed,
To take it the rest of my life.
