An Illinois man was arrested Sunday in Cedar Lake for driving 153 mph in a 60-mph zone.

At 5:30 p.m., a Griffith officer in full uniform in his squad car was on his way to work near 155th Avenue and U.S. Highway 41 when he observed a 2006 Pontiac GTO traveling at a high rate of speed in the opposite direction, police said.

He activated his radar and clocked the man — identified as Alexander Kemp, 22, of Midlothian, Illinois — going 93 mph over the speed limit. He pursued the driver, as the vehicle increased its distance from the officer. The vehicle eventually slowed down and pulled over.

The officer took Kemp into custody on a reckless driving charge. Asked why he was driving so fast, Kemp reportedly responded, "I just got it out of the shop." Three females — ages 20, 15 and 12, all from Cedar Lake — were passengers in the vehicle.

Little GTO
You’re really lookin’ fine
Three deuces and a four-speed
And a three-eighty-nine
Listen to her tachin’ up now
Listen to her whine
C’mon and turn it on, wind it up, blow it out, GTO
Yeah, yeah, little GTO
Yeah, yeah, little GTO
Yeah, yeah, little GTO
Yeah, yeah, little GTO
Aaah, little GTO

You oughta see her on a road course
Or a quarter mile
This little modified Pon-Pon
Has got plenty of style
She beats the gassers and the rail jobs
Really drives ‘em wild
C’mon and turn it on, wind it up, blow it out, GTO
Yeah, yeah, little GTO
Yeah, yeah, little GTO
Yeah, yeah, little GTO
Yeah, yeah, little GTO
Aaah, little GTO

Gonna save all my money
And buy a GTO (turnin’ it on blowin’ it out)
Get a helmet and a roll bar
And I’ll…

I’m impressed. Why GM dumped Pontiac for Buick, I’ll never understand.

I would take motorcycles, back in the 70s, out early Saturday mornings on a highway that would be crowded on weekdays. At 140 mph even with no cars it was a scary situation. As a motorcycle mechanic I liked to test my work albeit on my own machines. You can’t get the real feel of the bike on a dyno.

The 22-year -old perp.

No doubt wanted to impress his girlfriend (20) and her two younger sisters.

He impressed them, alright.

“Three females — ages 20, 15 and 12, all from Cedar Lake — were passengers in the vehicle.”

I’m going to go out on a limb and suggest that the presence of the 20 year old female had something to do with it.

I had my 85 Honda CRX up to 100 mph once on the freeway. Scary feeling so I backed it off real fast,

Ho humm... Year 1973... I pulled 165mph in a borrowed 911S Carrera. Passed a pickup with a camper. At 10 at night on a lonesome highway in the summer. Was 18. Went on to be a Deputy sheriff, then a police officer..then some things in Iraq and other tourist locales. High speed low drag. Ugly little car he drove..

140 on a motorcycle can really get your adrenaline going, this will do 160, but at my age I don't ride that fast anymore.

Mine was a mostly stock 750 Honda K3. It could do more. I didn’t want to.

What I loved to do was to take corvettes and muscle cars off the line. No contest.

Shoot, piker. My buddy and i had our 70s Z1s up to 135 mph for a good 35 miles on a Sunday afternoon beer run to the State Line. the only reason we didn’t go faster was because that was as fast as they would go.

Interesting time & speed. In 1970 I drove a friends mid-engined De Tomaso Pantera at 165 across Alligator Alley in south Florida - when it was a 2-lane road and alligators frequently were seen crossing it.

A long lonely and narrow stretch where there was no place for cops to park on the side......

I was very fortunate a gator wasn’t crossing at the time....car would likely have gone airborne hitting one at that speed.....with no survivors.....

Also interesting that my biker name is “Gator Napper” - given to me in 1965 by the Indianapolis Star newspaper (headline) when I and a friend were indicted for “borrowing” (’kidnapping’) a fully-grown 200 lb. 6’ alligator for a prank in .......hold on........northern Indiana.

We eventually let the alligator go in a forest into a pond....not knowing there was a creek from the pond into the state’s largest lake...which the alligator took .........freaking out, and raising the ire, of lake residents who wanted us caught - and electrocuted.

If you want a copy of the original articles, PM me & I’ll send them......

Mostly true. I will never forget the Corvette that passed me on Santa Fe Blvd. in Denver back in the 70s. We were at a stop light and he pulled up and revved like he wanted to race. I figured, “What the hell”. Before I left the intersection I was going 110 mph and as I shifted into 2nd the front wheel started climbing up off the ground. He passed me like I was standing still. Not kidding. I tried to catch up to see if he would show me what was under the hood but i couldn’t catch him.

Most people won’t understand how awesome that bike is, but I do.

Are you in Canada? I didn’t think they sold those here.
