It took some strength to haul the kid back up over the ledge. Gassama made it look easy but he looks like he could bench press a Shetland pony. Also, he needed leverage. Notice that when he gets to a certain point, he has the reach to be able to get a handhold beyond the ledge itself. He’s a fairly big guy.

So why didn’t the man standing 1 foot from the kid on the balcony reach over to grab him? From what I saw there was a higher partition between the balconies and the man was reaching around it just to hold the child in place, he was probably afraid to let go for a better position.
