Dog flu can be added to New York City's list of concerns.
The U.S. has been in the grip of canine influenza and now it appears to have made it to Brooklyn, with at least 14 dogs testing positive to the H3N2 strain, WNYW Fox5NY.com reported.

The groomer told me that I had to get dog vaccinated for canine influenza if I wanted to bring her back in the future. I talked with her vet and he said that it is now on the required list.
I would not take her to a dog park; too protective of my girl. She still needs good bath now and then to wash out the mud.
Will it spread to humans?
Potentially stupid question coming at ya. Can Felines also contract this Flu? I know is says ‘Dog Flu’.
The vaccination hardly does anything... its only for a small amount of varieties of the dog flu. Near useless like the human version.
Until the Dodgers return, nothing will be right.
“Any cat contracting that would die of humiliation.”
Not sure what you meant by that. It was a serious question.
In a word, yes. However, number of cats that contract this type of ‘dog flu’ is minimal, at present time.
Thank You.

There are 2 strains of this animal flu going around. The good thing is that there are vaccines for both. I just did a little net research AND called my veterinarian. According to both sources, cats can't catch the current flu, at least by normal routes of exposure. However, it is interesting to note that the H3N2 strain of the flu, according to a 2012 study, was able to infect cats experimentally when it was applied to them intranasally. H3N2 originated in birds and was first reported in 2007. Canine influenza H3N8 virus originated in horses, spread to dogs, and can now spread between dogs. I did not find any reports staying the cats could be infected with the H3N8 strain of the flu virus. I would suggest keeping cats indoors (I would do that anyway) and practicing good hygiene as far as keeping their bowls and other kit very clean.
Thanks for the info. DM
You're very welcome. I'm a very protective cat owner myself.
