Venezuela hit by first case of Polio since 1989 as country falls deeper into crisis

In Delta Amacuro, where the case was discovered, vaccine coverage only reached 67 per cent, according to a statement from a local watchdog group.

“The government is not approving the money for the vaccines,” said MP Manuela Bolivar, a member of the country’s opposition-controlled National Assembly who is studying the surge of infectious diseases.

President Nicolas Maduro has blamed the deteriorating situation on an “economic war” led by business interests and the United States to topple his socialist government, while denying that a humanitarian crisis exists.

According to the country’s vice-minister for health Indhriana Parada the country “guarantees essential medicines through a system of distribution to the most vulnerable sectors,” a statement she made in a presentation to the World Health Organisation on May 23.

Venezuela has also accounted for 85 per cent of cases of measles reported across Latin America and the Caribbean over the past year, according to the Pan-American Health Organization.

Of the 11 countries that reported cases, Venezuela had the overwhelming majority of cases, but also 35 deaths since mi-2017, according to the international organization. Cases of measles have been reported in 17 out of 23 of the country’s states and in the capital Caracas.

Monitoring the collapsing public health system has been complicated by a lack of access to public health data. Local health authorities took more than a month to notify the PAHO that they had identified a case of polio, although international health regulations require them to do so within 24 hours.

Chavez was elected at least twice, and both he and Maduro are not alien invaders. They are Venezuelans who represent Venezuelan culture and thinking in many ways

People get the kind of government they deserve

Yeah they have Cuban “doctors” and everything. Michael Moore told us how wonderful the healthcare system in Cuba is. What could be the problem?

Letting Polio repropagate is a VERY bad idea

Closing the Southern borders is looking like a good idea
from a public health standpoint.

Hmmm. I thought the last known cases were in the remote Pashtun hills of Afghanistan/Pakistan.

Socialist paradise. Famine and disease. Equal misery for all, (except for the 1% government elite who know what’s best for everyone, they live quite well).

The reason polio has not been eliminated is because of muslims. We were on the verge of wiping out polio a few years ago. But Pakistani and some African muslims refused to take the vaccine. There were only a couple of small pockets of polio left in the world. It would have gone the way of smallpox if not for the muslims.

Yes, that is what Rotary has been saying about its efforts to wipe out this terrible disease. Gates has ponied up close to $300MM in matching funds for the efforts. Of course the Muzzies fought the immunizations including killing some medical personnel who were volunteers.

From my perspective, viruses die in a high enough temperature environment. I think you can guess where I am going with that but if not, consider the nomenclature B-61s.

Most poor countries are at least able to vaccinate their children. You really have to try and destroy your public health infrastructure to bring polio back. Good job, Socialism!
