serpentwithfeet Crafts His Own Language For Queer Life
National Public Radio ^ | 06/18/2018 | Rachel Martin

Posted on 06/18/2018 7:51:11 AM PDT by Theo

Josiah Wise has face tattoos and a prominent septum piercing that almost touches his lips. Some days he wears bright blue makeup, or colors his facial hair neon pink. He has a collection of dolls and often carries one with him.

Equally eclectic is his musical background. He grew up singing in church choir, attended college for classical music, and now is finding his sound at a cross-section of gospel, R&B and avant-garde pop, performing under the name serpentwithfeet.

serpentwithfeet, Soil On his full-length debut album, soil (released June 8), he looks back to the sounds of his religious upbringing while crafting language to express living as a queer black person in the present. Wise was closeted growing up — partially to avoid conflict, he says, but mainly because he didn't have the language to express himself.

"Me being inconspicuous growing up, or people around me maybe not being comfortable, was because I didn't know what was going on," he says. "I didn't know how to talk about how I was feeling."

Wise says he wanted to be able to have a full conversation about the way he felt, not just about sex or attraction: "It just needed to be a full conversation, because my day is a queer day. I eat breakfast queer. I walk queer. I think that takes time for a young person."

As he's found his voice, others have taken notice. Bjork featured him on a remix of her song "Blissing Me" last year, and he toured as an opener for Grizzly Bear. With a sonic semblance to peers like Childish Gambino, Thundercat and Moses Sumney, Wise is positioning himself within the ranks of neo-soul staples.

Wise spoke about the musical and emotional road to the creation of soil with NPR's Rachel Martin. Hear their conversation at the audio link.

NPR gave over 7 minutes of air time to an interview with this man. Yes, that is a satanic symbol tattooed on his forehead.

I found his music to be extremely annoying and self-indulgent. It seems that NPR only airs segments that bash Trump, trash Christians, promote illegal immigration, and push the LGBTQ+ agenda.

I'm posting this here for discussion ...

No surprise there.

That is why it must be denied ANY public funding. Let the fellow travelers fund it.

Crazy people produce art. Nothing new here. Some of their art might be good. Some bad.

The painter Richard Dadd was in a madhouse for decades after he killed his father (he was sure his father was the Devil in disguise). He was a good painter. Couldn’t be allowed out into public.

This guy? He’s not a good musician and he shouldn’t be allowed out in public. He cray-cray.

I sometimes catch NPR's show "Fresh Air" by accident (because sometimes that station plays classical music).

NPR's "Fresh Air" is run by some old white lady, but the show's topics are always some peculiar non-white abnormal mental case who has a play/music/book.

NPR will then play a clip of this work, some of it truly ugly, and dreadful, and vile—something you wouldn't want your grandmother to hear.

The real hoot is that this old lady who runs the show, who clearly would rather be listening to show tunes from Cats, forces herself to listen and gush and make happy talk with someone whom she will never see again, and likely never even think about again.

And of course the old NPR lady will never, never take her own coin to purchase this dross. She can't see the hypocrisy of her condescension, of patronizing these people, holding them to a lesser standard than she believes in her heart.

Nothing is more pathetic than a old liberal white lady trying so desperately to be hip that she doesn't have the guts and honesty to tell these people how she really feels.

I’ll tell you what is really pathetic... the fact that taxpayers are funding this vile, Satanic garbage.

There is nothing in the least out of the ordinary in the factual observations you made.

NPR and PBS are thorns in my side, knowing my money goes to supporting them even if in smaller amounts than it used to.

True. But the sticking point for me is that my hard-earned tax dollars are being spent to give this twit airtime.

I know you know that, but...it does irritate me.

If the Left found a guy living in the tombs, pining away and cutting himself, they’d run him for office.

I thought NPR and PBS were going to lose their funding under Trump. There was a motion in that direction, but then silence. What happened?
