Stalin arranged things so as to have the Germans and the West exhaust each other, so that the Red Army could sweep across Europe with little opposition...except that the Germans were faster on the draw and absolutely pulverized the Soviet units that were crowded into offensively-oriented positions very close to the border with the Third Reich.
