Dee Ann Andretti buried in Pennsylvania

With 17 victories in the Verizon IndyCar Series including the 2014 Indianapolis 500 and the 2012 IndyCar Series championship, Ryan Hunter-Reay is the most successful driver at Andretti Autosport and has earned his reputation as team leader. Marco Andretti has the longest tenure of the team’s four drivers, having been a part of the team since his rookie season in 2006.
Hunter-Reay may not be an “Andretti” but he certainly understands the importance of what that family means. And this week more than any other, Hunter-Reay has helped bring comfort to a family that continues the grieve the loss of its matriarch.
Dee Ann Andretti, who for 57 years was Mario Andretti’s wife, died Tuesday from complications following open heart surgery. She was 76 years old and her death has devastated Mario, the racing legend, his son Michael, the team owner of Andretti Autosport, Marco, her grandson, and the rest of the Andretti family.
Dee Ann Andretti was buried Friday in Pennsylvania. Michael and Marco were back to work Saturday at Iowa Speedway preparing for Sunday’s Iowa Corn 300. Mario remained back in Pennsylvania where he comes to grips with the loss of the woman who was the bedrock of the family for nearly six decades.
“It’s a terrible loss, no doubt,” Hunter-Reay said. “I feel terrible for Mario. They were married for 57 years and it’s like the right half of your body being gone. Certainly, Michael has taken it hard and so has Marco. It’s tough to come to work under those circumstances.
“At the same time, racing is beautiful that way. I’m sure Michael would rather be nowhere else but be at the race track in the heat of it, competing for a championship.
“It’s a tough time. I lost my mother at a younger age. There is no way around it, you just have to get your mind back into what you love doing and that is where racing is a gift to us all.”
