The Minnesota Department of Corrections confirms a corrections officer at the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Stillwater died after an assault by an offender Wednesday afternoon.
A release stated Joseph Gomm was attacked in an industry building around 1:30 p.m. He was rushed to Regions Hospital where he was later pronounced dead. Gomm had been with the department for 16 years.
Sources confirmed the identity of the offender as Edward Muhammad Johnson. Johnson is serving a sentence for homicide, according to DOC records.
Sources also confirmed Johnson attacked Gomm with a hammer.
At a press conference Wednesday afternoon, DOC Commissioner Tom Roy said Johnson has yet to be interviewed by the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. "We believe for the first time in our history we have lost a corrections officer to violence in our institution at Stillwater," he said.
He said the BCA had arrived on the scene. He added the facility was placed on lockdown.
According to the DOC website, the facility in Stillwater is the state's largest close-security institution for adult male felons. DOC records show 527 inmates with active sentences for homicide at Stillwater. Roy said the department was in mourning.
"The corrections family is reeling from this incident," Roy said. "We are not accustomed to losing staff." He added, "Officer Gomm was a fine man doing honorable work."

I like when you kill someone and go to prison for live and kill someone there and now what, nada, nothing.
Perhaps MN should consider legalizing the death penalty for these types of crimes.

"A Bloomington man who stabbed an acquaintance to death while her 5-year-old daughter was nearby pleaded guilty Thursday to second-degree intentional murder.
"She [the girl] heard it all," Lori Thompson, the mother of Brooke Thompson, said she told police. Brooke Thompson's body was found Aug. 14 in the bathroom of Edward M. Johnson's apartment.
Johnson, 26, told Hennepin County District Judge Rob Lynn, who was hearing the case without a jury, that he stabbed Thompson several times with a knife on Aug. 13. He said the stabbing was intentional, but he gave no reason for it.

Back in 1981, a female Correction officer was murdered by an inmate at New York State's Greenhaven Correctional Facility. The convict, serial murderer Lemuel Smith was serving a life sentence.
I was working at Auburn at the time. We attended her funeral service at Clinton. Her husband was an officer at Clinton Correctional at the time. He later worked as a Captain at the last facility I was at before I retired.
The bastard Lemuel Smith is still alive.
Had this happen a few years ago at the South Dakota penitentiary. The perps beat a 60 year old guard to death in a crude escape attempt. Both got the death penalty and were executed. No 20 year wait for justice in that case. I doubt liberal MN will ever have a death penalty unless when sharia law is adopted here.

I worked 28 years inside in California. The answer was supertax and controlling movement, but still there were killings. Californians constantly vote for the death penalty and pelicans delay and obfuscate and no one gets executed.
