Hawaii offers a cautionary tale of a socialist future for the U.S.

(snip)Just how expensive is Hawaii?

According to the Hawaii Public Housing Authority, a single person can qualify for housing assistance on Oahu while earning as much as $54,850 annually. A family of four only becomes too rich for housing assistance at $78,300. What would classify as middle-class America as a whole (median income around $56,000), is poor in Hawaii.

(snip)As of 2016, the average home price in Hawaii was $905,000, far “ahead” of second-placed Massachusetts, at $580,000. In Honolulu, the average home price is $1.2 million.

According to CNBC, Hawaii has the second-highest tax burden in the country, just behind New York. The total burden is 11.57 percent, including a 2.2 percent property tax, a 2.85 percent individual tax and a 6.52 total sales and excise tax.

Daily expenses are higher, too. Hawaii has the most expensive gasoline at $4.17 per gallon, which includes the fourth highest gas tax in the country (49.1 cents.) Electricity rates are more than double any other state (37.2 cents per kilowatt-hour) and a gallon of milk is between $7 and $8 at most stores.

(snip) Hawaii is entirely controlled by Democrats and has been for years. All statewide elected officials and all of the state’s federal lawmakers are Democrats. The 51-member state House has five Republicans and the 25-member state Senate is the only one in the country with no Republicans.

According to CNBC’s latest “best states to do business,” Hawaii was 47th and the state consistently ranks near the bottom in new business startups.

Homelessness is an urgent statewide problem. Other states pay to send their homeless populations to Hawaii. Honolulu repealed anti-vagrancy laws and the homeless population is everywhere(snip)

From a fiscal perspective, Hawaii is a ticking time bomb and a federal bailout request (like Puerto Rico) is easy to imagine.

It's an island. Real estate is limited explaining why housing costs so much.

Hawaii has long benefited from a strong military presence and tourist industry. This, like Europe, affords them the ability to run extensive social programs.

The climate is attractive to homeless as is Florida's.

There is also an underlying dislike of whites and the US as we colonized Hawaii.

If it weren't such a strategically located island in the Pacific it would be tempting to cut it loose....but we need it for that reason.

I’m 64. Hawaii has been expensive my whole life. I’ve been to every island except Maui and really enjoy the place. I’ve been to every state in the union except a few on the east coast. Considering the climate and beauty (and seafood), the big island is where I would retire if money was no object.

Why can't liberals recognize that killing off their valuable resources is no way to sustain a vibrant economy? You've got the entire Left Coast of the US...beautiful landscape, oceans, lots of natural resources--let's tax it to death and put a lot of burdensome regulations in place! Let's be lenient on illegal immigrants and crime, too.

Now, Hawaii...beautiful beaches, tourists come their in droves to see the majestic beauty. Hmmm...let's allow homeless to go anywhere they want, sleep anywhere they want, poop anywhere they want. That'll keep the tourists coming. Or, maybe not.

Used to live there. At that time you could airmail a box of cereal from the mainland cheaper than you buy it in the store. Five families controlled access to the islands and pretty much owned all the usable land. Read the book Hawaii. Its not too far off actual history. The natives got religion. The missionary’s got damn near everything else.

Other states pay to send their homeless populations to Hawaii.

If this is true, they need to shipped back where they came from pronto. Hawaii is a small state and can't afford out of state bums. They have enough of their own.

US citizens can reside in any state they wish. If Hawaii wants to control immigration into it, it can declare itself an independent nation.

I own “Hawaii Pono” and “Shoal of Time”-——both great book on Hawaii.

Real estate on the Big Island is absolutely affordable. We have property there and was looking at retiring there until our parents started getting ill and then dieing. Puma area is no more than California where we live now. I’m headed there again in September.

I was walking down to a marina and saw what I thought was a bunch of shipping containers.

It was low income housing.

Turns out bums and hippies like a nice climate with pretty scenery, too.

A friend of mine lives there and you’re right. I have to admit that I kinda joked that if I outlive my wife, I just might stake out a spot on the big island. One thing I like about it is that it is by far the least touristy of the islands. It’s a place I could live, rather than just visit. And the beautiful, yet deserted beaches are an attraction as well.

Haha you’re not alone. I’ve told daughter that if I outlive hubby the House we’re in is sold and she can find me either living on a big ass boat in Ventura or finishing the family compound in Hawaii. Lol

I know a guy who took an IT contract gig in Honolulu. He was very excited about it, until about a week into it someone jumped him outside his office building and broke his jaw.
