Colonel Russell Williams Interrogation - Feb 7, 2010 - Det. Jim Smyth
YouTube ^

This is one of the most amazing videos I have ever seen but in order to appreciate it fully, you need to take the time to watch in full (or at least the first hour) the linked 2 1/2 hour video which is actually highlights of a much longer 9-hour total interrogation that occurred in Ottawa, Ontario on February 7, 2010.

In order to fully appreciate the video I'm asking you to watch, you might want to familiarize yourself with the Williams murder case, which is very notorious up in Canada but not that well known here in the U.S.

This interrogation was conducted by Detective Jim Smyth of the OPP (Ontario Provincial Police) and is considered such a tour de force that it is shown at police academies all over the world as a textbook case of how a professional interrogation is to be performed.

The way that Smyth totally relaxes the suspect at the beginning and than proceeds to masterfully paint him into a corner that he cannot escape out of is far more compelling than any cop TV show that you could watch. This is REAL LIFE and Smyth singlehandedly solved this case and extracted a full confession all in one interview.

Even if you just watch the first hour, you will see a confident and in-control Colonel Russell Williams turn into a totally defeated man within the space of an hour. Apparently Williams was called at his home to come in for questioning and told his wife he'd be back home for dinner. Instead, barely 30 minutes in the video, you can see the sagging body language of Williams as he slowly realizes that his life is over and he's never going home again. Within an hour, he's asking for a map to show Smyth where one of the bodies are.

The overall Williams case is a sordid one. Two dead women and two other women who were sexually assaulted by Williams. In addition, he broke into a number of other houses, stealing women's lingerie that he would model and take pictures of himself wearing. He even went into the homes of little girls to steal their underwear which he meticulously cataloged and stored in his home. He was a real degenerate but up to the moment of this interrogation, he was a respected Wing Commander at the largest air force base in Canada.

They really know how to handle this kind of person there.

On October 22, 2010, Williams was stripped of his commission, ranks, and awards by the Governor General on the recommendation of the Chief of the Defense Staff. His severance pay was terminated and the salary he received following his arrest was seized, although he is still entitled to a pension.

Subsequent to his conviction, his uniform was burned, his medals were destroyed and his vehicle crushed and scrapped.

Yes, I took note of that too. The Canadian military basically rubbed him out of existence as he was a disgrace to their reputation.

A couple of months after this interrogation, Williams attempted suicide in his jail cell by trying to jam the cardboard from a toilet paper roll into his throat (yikes).

From what I can gather, he's still alive and in solitary confinement to this day. As part of his plea bargain (he pleaded guilty to 88 crimes), he did not have any child pornography charges filed against him. Apparently he also had a fetish for the underwear of very young girls.

Yeah he was one sick murderer. The most mind boggling aspect of this was that he apparently corresponded with another jailed notorious killer Paul Bernardo during his killing days with um shop talk on killing. How that was allowed to happen is beyond me.
