Catch the perps and at sea, make them walk the plank in shark infested waters or.. better yet put them in a raft, at sea in the middle of nowhere...let ‘em rot.

Wasn’t this sub/museum in the news a year ago or more?

Remember seeing a segment on one of the TV programs about this submarine deteriorating on the Hackensack River ... with little funding its future looked bleak. The question was how to remove it which someone commented on a earlier post.
A short distance away in Bayonne, NJ there was a huge scrap yard where old navy ships were dismantled. Saw a WWII era aircraft being being scrapped, this was maybe 25 years ago. This submarine, with no wartime history, should have met a similar fate.

Hmmm... So you're saying it wasn't really in use for the purpose it was put there for, stuck in the mud actually, and at least two other big obstacles to moving it...

Well, gee...

"Nice old WWII submarine you got there... sure would be too bad if it was to just sink right here forever or sumtin'... Gino, go tell Tony I need to talk to him in private at The Bing..."

I’m saying that the Ling has been left to rot. There isn’t the money and the will necessary to save her. Not an honorable ending for a warship.

I had to take an FBI agent and a Park Service officer to a remote compound shut down for the winter. Easier to access from Canada, scrappers came down on snow mobiles and cut every wire they could off an extensive solar off the grid installation. Quite a mess.

Just sayin’, and only maybe about 51 percent kidding.

Just today’s edition of a topic DP and I have touched on a couple of times.

(Or, maybe someone took a certain TV series just a little bit too seriously.)

Just sayin’...

And the 1945 numbers were only 5 months of that year. If the war in Europe went on a few more months, their losses could have been near 100%.

Actually the situation was exactly the opposite. The Germans were starting to launch the type XXI U boat which would have been a game changer, bad for us and good for them. We dodged a bullet.

They were the first submarines designed to operate primarily submerged, rather than spending most of their time as surface ships that could submerge for brief periods as a means to escape detection or to attack. They incorporated a large number of batteries to increase the time they could spend under water, to as much as several days, and they only needed to surface to periscope depth for recharging via a snorkel. The design included many general improvements as well: much greater underwater speed by an improved hull design, greatly improved diving times, power-assisted torpedo reloading and greatly improved crew accommodations.

But allied antisubmarine warfare was improving all of the time.

Post war they(Type XXI) were used by many nations because they were so good. They were going to be game changer in the Atlantic. A lot has been written on the type XXI as quantum leap in sub technology. The only thing topping their technology was nuclear propulsion. The type XXI would have been devastating to the allies. Like I said we got lucky.
