This is not an endangered species - they should be shot on sight!!!! Too many wandering around near people, children and pets.

Never walk your dog near the water where gators are present.

A problem we have in Fla. is people feeding them (which is illegal here by the way). That gets them used to being around humans, that seems to be when they get more dangerous than they already are.

Also:

“Sheriff’s Office Environmental Crimes Unit”

Never heard of such.

Bald Head Island has Gators wandering everywhere. You must protect your kids and pets....and obviously your wife. Be careful walking at night. You are their snack.

Our family had just checked into a condo near where this happened several years ago - our 12 year old son was walking near a lagoon and foolishly ran to scare some birds - then from the opposite side a gator came up from the water with mouth wide open to grab a bird. I think my son soiled his pants - never saw it coming and was staring into the wide open mouth of a gator about 10 feet away.
Later we learned the gator had showed up a couple of days before, believe it got a little dog. Animal control people came and got it, just relocated it somewhere else.

I live 10 miles from where this happened. We always have 4-8 foot (up to 12') alligators in the ponds. I live on such a pond. Our "association" does not allow us to kill the pond weeds (3-4'tall) around the ponds for environmental reasons and I "might" go to jail if I shoot my neighbor but I "WILL" go to jail if I shoot an alligator.

The weeds have mysteriously died along my property's edge with the pond. At least I can see the gators now to avoid them. I bought this property because I like to fish in my back yard. You cannot go near the ponds if the gators have cover, they are ambush predators. These things should be shot on sight above 5 feet. Killing a snake is now against the law, these things are also REPTILES, just a helluva lot larger and a helluva lot more dangerous! I just hope the next victim is an environmentalist.

She didn’t to be faster than the gator - just faster than her dog.

Tagged along with my golfing husband at a Hilton head course...on one hole saw a huge Gator up on a hill. Wached that sucker carefully and got away asap.

Limited seasonal licensed gator hunting, the prompt elimination of nuisance gators, and due caution by the public almost always suffice against the risk of gator attacks. Investigation of the handful of gator attacks on humans every year usually shows that a nuisance gator was unwisely fed or tolerated or that the victim was careless. The root problem is less that gators are a menace but that humans are sometimes negligent in guarding against their potential for harm.

Down here in Mississippi, we taught our kids and grand-kids to be observant for such potential hazards. After the daughter moved to Upstate NY, she had them out for a picnic at one of the lakes and they raised some eyebrows when they asked her if they had to watch for alligators...

Years ago, when I was in nearby Parris Island, the drill instructors warned us recruits not to try an escape, as the waters around us were filled with alligators. I thought at the time they were just messing with us. Guess not.
