Hawaiis holiday season will get a little extra dose of magic this year, with one of the true voices of Christmas scheduling two concerts for the Blaisdell Concert Hall.
Johnny Mathis, whose landmark holiday album Merry Christmas was released 60 years ago, will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 21 and 22, his first shows in the islands in more than 20 years. Backed by a 35-piece orchestra, Mathis will sing a mix of Christmas standards and his own greatest hits. Mathis has two No. 1 songs to his name Chances Are and Too Much, Too Little, Too Late as well as hits such as Misty and The Twelfth of Never.
Sponsored by Curtis?
??????
JM does not like Roses on his Piano. He wants Tulips on his Organ.
Can’t stand him....never could...
WOW...I really thought he was dead. Glad to see he’s still kicking. I was never a big fan but my mom loved one of his Christmas albums and would play it all through the holidays.
agree- love his voice...
How come ?
Good Grief - 83 !
Dang. Good for him to still be performing, and I hope it’s a great experience for the audience.
They’re gonna have a gay old time.
(OK, that was bad) :-P
I’m sure I wouldn’t know.
Is that faggie still around?
Then don’t listen. Simple solution.
Glad to hear he is still with us.
In the 80s, Mathis used to perform his final concert tour performances in the Bay area. I made it a point to always attend the one in Concord Ca. As far as I can remember, he was quiet about his personal life. Frankly that is fine by me as I enjoyed his shows. I grew up on his music (Im 73) during a time when people kept their sexual orientations to themselves. I wish it were the same today.
One of my coworkers heard I was attending one of the concerts and said remember, when you hear those love songs, the image you see in your mind is not the same as his. I thought that was funny.
Can’t believe he is 83!! Saw him in person at the Okeefe Center in Toronto Canada in the early 90’s. We were about 8 feet from him (front row seats). Amazing voice. Chances are, we’ll see him again but the tickets for his concerts now run in the $400 range.
In his book Role Models, John Waters talked to Johnny and mentioned his sexuality. “He described it as ‘a lifestyle to which one has become accustomed...Here’s another surprise: Johnny’s a Republican...”
John Waters, interviewed in The Nation 2016:
>>Q. The problem is that apparently Johnny Mathis is a Republican.
>>A. I guess so. I didnt ask him. So what? Why do all liberals seem shocked when people disagree with them? My assistants a Republican. Im a bleeding heart liberal. Im a limousine liberal. I only voted for Obama because he was a friend of Bill Ayres. Republicans hate Obama as much as we hated Bush. Lets hope that this November they arent as smart as we were last time.
